Jimi Hendrix and the Experience
Bruce Springstein and the E Street Band

Hotel California changed the world (in as much as music can)!!!!

This entire album was an alarming social criticism of the emerging yuppy rage of the 1980's. It was a document of how the ideological concepts of peace and harmony that were full of so much hope in the 60's faded into the wealth and greed of Reagonomics and Wall Street. The hippie generation that promised free sex, free drugs, and peace betrayed society by giving us crack, homophobia, and a cold war that seemed to never end.

Musically, the Eagles blended folk, blues and country in a way that was more powerful and alluring than anyone since C,S,N&Y. A band consisting of 3 excellent guitarist who harmonized sound in a way only equaled by the harmony of the 4 members of the band who could sing. No successful band, except the Beatles, had four lead singers and four song writers all of whom contributed their own personal blend to every record. I think it would be difficult to find a band that has produced more successful solo artists: Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Glen Frey, or had more of a universal appeal. People who liked country, the blues, bluegrass, rock, and heavy metal could all be found humming Eagles tunes. I saw the Eagles in concert at Red Rocks in Colorado during the "Hell Freezes over Tour" and you could not believe the diversity of the crowd. Cowboys sitting next to Hells Angels sitting next to school teachers all singing every word to every song in unison.

Lynard Skynard also formed a new type of music that was unheard of before their beginning. Southern Rock or Rebel Rock begat CCR, Alman Brothers, and many others. Free Bird will forever be acknowledged as one of the greatest rock anthems of all time. In the South, Skynard are folk heroes along with Stonewall Jackson and Elvis. They were an amazing live band (when I saw them they played for 3 1/2 hours in the driving snow) who wrote incredible songs.

Obviously this list is entirely subjective.

Also, I forgot to mention The Beach Boys (who I think certainly belong in the top 10), The Who and Black Sabbath (honorable mentions).

reasonable peeps could disagree about bulletboys over slaughter, and i would've put great white over vixen before they exploded their drummer, but otherwise i think everyone can agree that this is pretty much the best list out there.

Cool List DP, but no love for Beethoven?

I think Ode to Joy is the greatest piece of music ever conceived.

Wow I will give some thoughts on my list.

Agreed. When I die, play that at my funeral.

Slamber--do we HAVE to go throught this AGAIN?? I've told you--at your funeral we're going to play "Terd Mission" by Pansy Division. Then there will be a drinking game involving a donkey. Somehow. I haven't exactly worked that one out, but there's going to be at least one donkey at your funeral.

Also, your tombstone will read, "Here lies Slamber. A bitch in life, and a bitch now that she's gone. Guidance!"

i would love to see 007's list.

I couldn't possibly argue with your list Duck, except to possibly move Hendrix to the top. But everybody knows my feelings on Hendrix (I am up to 67 discs of material. Boo-yah!)
