what, aren't there any other sports to discuss these days? no one paying attention to the basketball? or hockey? or olympics?
basketball? or hockey? or olympics?
I watch all of these things. I just don't know as much about them as the NFL.
I have mostly been watching Olympics, but soon it will be March Madness, & that is my favorite time of year. Anything can happen. I love college bb. I had the National Champ & the runner-up last year on my bracket.
The Heat are doing pretty well. We'll see if they can keep it together & make a run.
How about those Chicago teams, eh?

didn't they start all this up because baseball was voted out of the olympics? anybody know why that happened?
The stated reason why baseball/softball is no longer in the Olympics is because the "Sport is not universal enough, MLB doesn't send their pros, and it is too expensive for Olympic sites to build baseball venues for every Olympics." The actual reason is because the Olympics are run by a bunch of European bastards (11 of the 12 members of the Olympic committee are from European countries) who will not include any sport that is not popular in Europe.
Consider the following:
There is an Olympic event called Skiing Biathathon which combines the downhill with cross country skiing. Since its inception in the 1930's there have been 76 medals given. 73 of them were won by either Sweden of Finland. In 70 years, only 3 medals were given to another country, yet for some reason baseball is not universal enough, despite the fact that baseball is popular in all of North American, Central American, South American, and all of Asia. But because there is no interest in Europe, they dumped the sport. Since the Olympics generate a substancial amount of income from American TV deals and American tourists, I don't see how it is possible that the Olympics could lose money on America's past-time. And the MLB said that if the Olympics retained baseball they would make their players available to play (just like hockey), but the Euroturds rejected the idea.
Yes, that is why we have this baseball classic. Also I must say that I am really irritated with the American press. Every single thing I heard on ESPN about the Olympics was trash talk about how dumb it is. For a sports network to critize the Olympics because NBC outbid them is incredibly petty and unfortunate.
I am excited about the World Baseball Classic. No doubt, I have some fear about injuries, but how can you possible tell somebody that they should not play for their home country. Any event that has athletes playing for their home country, without pay, just for the pride of playing, I am always in favor of.

WBC Notebook: Pumped Pujols commits for 2009 Classic
by Eric Edwards
March 15, 2006
SAN JUAN, P.R.--Albert Pujols plays for one of the best teams in the major leagues, but didn't mince words when asked to assess this Dominican team at the World Baseball Classic.
"This is the best team I've been a part of and I've been on a number of very good clubs," said Pujols before the D.R. qualified for the semifinals with a 2-1 victory against Venezuela. "It's truly an honor to be playing alongside guys like David Ortiz, Miguel Tejada and Alfonso Soriano."
The Cardinals star said he is already looking forward to representing the Dominican Republic at the next tournament in 2009.
"They can write my name down. This has been a phenomenal experience. As long as I'm healthy I'll be ready to represent the Dominican Republic," said Pujols.
That is why I love Alberto so much. I think for everyone who is from someplace other than America, this WBC is more important to them than winning the World Series. For some reason Americans no longer give a damn about world competitions. Still I think it is awesome that baseball, a sport invented by America, has reached world wide popularity in just over 100 years. Basketball is not far behind either. The fact that the US can only win by cheating only illustrates how important Baseball has become in the world, and how much pride all of the foreign players have in playing for their home countries.
I am going to try and find a Pujols Dominican jersey. I think that would be a cool jersey to own.

don't surprise me at all yo (though i will say that the koreans surprise the hell out of me and that i'm impressed with the cubans' record). the US didn't have all its best players for one thing. for another, it's just kinda the nature of baseball--in a small sample size (which the entire WBC is), with so many high-caliber, major league-quality players on the other teams, gonna be a lotta variability in the results. i mean, look at the mexican staff that knocked out the US. estaban loiaza won 21 fucking MLB games a coupla years ago. oliver perez (who started last night for mexico) struck out like 29,000,000 people in 200 innings in 2004. and mexico's a fringe team in the WBC!
it's one of the reasons baseball has a series format for its playoffs. but there's not nearly so much room for error i nthe WBC.
besides, dontrelle sucked by all accounts.
