Good question. I did this questionnaire that I read in a book on positive psychology at an online site called www.authentichappiness.com
It is called the VIA Strengths Survey, and its aim is to help you recognize which of 24 different character strengths (all subcategories of the 6 most ubiquitous virtues in the world's cultural traditions) are the ones that are your "signature strengths" These are strengths that you idenify with, "own", celebrate, and hopefully get the chance to use everyday.
I don't know if the survey will enlighten your ass, but if you have the patience to rate yourself honestly on 240 simple statements (maybe 20 minutes in all), you will be able to see some of your most positive qualities highlighted.
I liked getting the results because it made me feel kind of like I was looking at my character in a role-playing campaign, with my strengths clearly outlined. And since my character is really me, I get to play with these things with a +1 or +2 bonus on all my rolls in all my daily "campaigns.":headbang:
In case you care to know, my top 5 strength categories were:
1. Curiosity & Interest in the World
2. Judgement, Critical Thinking, & Open-Mindedness
3. Humor & Playfulness
4. Perspective (wisdom)
5. Creativity, ingenuity, originality
Try it yourself if you like.

False Alarm
04-06-2006, 04:34 PM
i took the survey. i think my bottom five give a clearer picture of me than my strengths.
false alarm's weaknesses:
20. Social intelligence
You are unaware of the motives and feelings of other people. You don't know what to do to fit in to different social situations, and you have no idea what to do to put others at ease.
21. Bravery and valor
You are a craven who shrinks from threat, challenge, difficulty, or pain. You do not speak up for what is right, especially if there is opposition. You never act on your convictions.
22. Hope, optimism, and future-mindedness
You expect the worst in the future, and you do nothing to avert it. You believe that the future is not something that you can control.
23. Zest, enthusiasm, and energy
Regardless of what you do, you approach it with apathy and lethargy. You do everything halfway or halfheartedly. For you, life is not an adventure.
24. Industry, diligence, and perseverance
You never finish what you start. No matter the project, you "get it out the door" late, if at all. You get distracted when you work, and you take no satisfaction in completing tasks.

JVO--Glad ya liked the site. It appears that we share several strengths. Love of learning was my #6.
What did you guys think of your results? Any strengths that you do not see yourself using regularly or don't seem to define you? I think that False Alarm's inspection of the opposite end is interesting too. It made me think more about what I am not using that I could. Despite trying to keep the outward appearance of fairness, strong leadership, humility, and gratitude, it all takes a backseat to my desire to figure things out for myself and display my knowledge to others. Some of you have witnessed this first hand in school when I was the kid who had to raise his hand EVERY TIME THE TEACHER ASKED A QUESTION. I learned to ease off a little bit when I went to college, but I am still a big nerd.
Woo hoo! Go nerds!

Gratitude threw me off...I'm still skeptical about it.
My weaknesses were pretty funny. Human Playfulness was one. (what happened to my sense of humor?)
Preserverance...I also don't like to finish what I start.

mine are worthless. which explains alot.
1. appreciation of beaty. how is this a strength?
2. capacity for love. how's that gonna pay the bills?
3. perspective (wisdom). finally something useful.
4. bravery and valor. obvious.
5. humor and playfulness. how is this a strength?
as you can tell this test basicly reveals why i am such a good for nothing loser. my strengths are things that don't have any practical application.
my weaknessess are in key areas:
24. enthusiasm. zero
23. self-control. zero
22. diligence. zero
21. forgiveness. not much
20. modesty.
It seems like this survey is about how you perceive yourself to be as opposed to how you actually are. It would be interesting to have somebody who really knows me well answer the questions as though they were me and see how similar their results are to mine.

duckplucker- Why are you so hard on yourself? We are who we are. If you haven't changed those traits by now, why not enjoy what you have?
JVO- I tried to answer my questions based on what I thought other people would answer and how I percieve myself.
For instance the questions on whether your friends think you are wise?
Who knows really? I don't recall having conversations with the peeps where everyone told me how great and wise I am. Who has those conversations?

shit. i answered neutrally or negatively for almost every single one of those questions. i don't think i should even HAVE a top 5, but here they are (literally i only scored higher than about 10 to 15 percent of the others that took the test on these):
1) leadership
2) Creativity, ingenuity, and originality
3) humor and playfulness
4) judgment, critical thinking, and open-mindedness
5) honesty, authenticity, and genuineness
my bottom 5, and, like FA, i think these describe me much better than the top 5:
20) Caution, prudence, and discretion
You are a not a careful person, and your choices are consistently the incorrect ones. You constantly say and do things that you regret.
21) Gratitude
You take everything good in your life for granted. You are not even aware of the good things that happen to you. You never thank your family and friends for the things they do for you, and so they think you are an ungrateful person.
22) Modesty and humility
You constantly seek the spotlight, preferring to let others do the work, and you take the credit. You regard yourself as special, and better than everyone around you.
23) Zest, enthusiasm, and energy
Regardless of what you do, you approach it with apathy and lethargy. You do everything halfway or halfheartedly. For you, life is not an adventure.
24) Forgiveness and mercy
You never forgive those that have wronged you, and hold a grudge for a very long time, if not forever. Second chances are something that you never give, and seeking revenge on others for what they done to you is the guiding principle of your life.

I used the same method you did. But like you said who has conversations about how wise we are? or funny?
Kinda reminds me of when we all made up D&D ability scores for ourselves.

Hmmmm...interesting.
My Top 5:
1. Appreciation of beauty and excellence
2. Creativity, ingenuity, and originality
3. Leadership
4. Perspective (wisdom)
5. Hope, optimism, and future-mindedness
My Bottom 5:
1. Citizenship, teamwork, and loyalty
2. Spirituality, sense of purpose, and faith
3. Self-control and self-regulation
4. Caution, prudence, and discretion
5. Modesty and humility
So, essentially, I can appreciate beauty and be creative, and have a decent sense of perspective, but I'm an arrogant loner with no discipline! Well, it's mostly true. ;)
DP, don't be hard on yourself. When life is really shitty, sometimes the appreciation of beauty is all you have...and that can give you hope to get through it (now I sound like a new-age self-help book, but I'm being totally serious).

So some of you are not too jazzed about your top five because they seem to not be getting you where you money or practical things...let me ask you this:
Do you get the opportunity to do things with these strengths each day? For those how appreciate beauty, do you have access to it? For those of you who have leadership strengths, do you get to lead? If you have creative strength do you get to use it?
Also, which of your strengths makes you feel most alive?
I feel really good when I am creative. It often accesses my sense of humor or analytical thinking or curiosity in ways that open up all sorts of things that make me feel really good. How about you?

Its true about the D&D ability scores, but no one agreed that they were accurate.
