Yup, eMule is pretty good... or you can try grabbing stuff from those torrent sites with BitTorrent (http://www.bittorrent.com/).

If Talking Sandwich jumps on here, he might be able to explain the intricacies of "newsgroups". That seems to be the best/safest route these days.

Newsgroups rule (also known as Usenet) . . you can get a good idea of how they work here: http://www.slyck.com/ng.php

----------------------------------------------------------------

Basically you'll want to have these things to get started:

1. A newsgroup search engine. . . I use http://www.newzbin.com. If you search for something on there and want to download it . . the site will give you an NZB file. You then open up that file in your favorite newsgroup reading program (see #2) and blamo, you're downloading illegal software / music / movies . .etc.

2. A newsgroup reader.. . . You'll most definitley want to use Newsbin (spelled with an S) . . you can get a demo of it here: http://www.newsbin.com/

3. An account at a premium newgroup provider . . . I use giganews (http://www.giganews.com) . . . This costs $24.95/month for unlimited downloads, but it is well worth it. You see, the newsgroups are just a collection of posts (like this message board) . . . and most places you access the newsgroups from only keep 1 - 3 days worth of posts (since it requires so much space) . . services like giganews keep 60 days of posts . . basically increasing the chances of you finding what you are looking for. Trust me, you will make back that 24.95 in the first 15 minutes.

It really is insane once you get it going. Rarely do you find just individual songs, only FULL ALBUMS. You can get any TV show or movie right as (sometimes before) they are released. And the download speeds are just sick. With giganews I get 10.25mbit. . .thats like a full album in less than a minute.

There . .cats out of the bag . . now start pirating . . .arrrrggghh!! (pirate noise)

Very good info there TS.

These days I'd go strictly with newsgroups.. much better, faster & safer than anything else out there! :biker:

So I am thinking about switching to these newsgroups. I have a question :

Are these things legal or are they just "less illegal"?

i use imesh

it used to be pretty bad but is now much better ( in terms of the spyware and whatnot)

i always have trouble with bittorrent for some reason.

the newsgroups have a couple of advantages, legally. for one thing, they're far, far less popular than the popular trading networks like emule and bittorrent, so they're a little less policed. but far more importantly, you can totally leech the stuff. as in, you can download without having to upload. torrents and emule both share out the files you're downloading as you're downloading them, so even though you just downloaded a movie and then deleted it immediately, they can still bust you for sharing copyrighted material, since parts of it were available as you were downloading it.

no such problem with newsgroups. i signed up for giganews+newzbin a few weeks ago, and man, it's sweet. the selection isn't quite as great, but you can easily get popular or new material. i downloaded sin city, batman begins, and the hitchhiker's guide movies last night (still haven't seen any of those!) and it's so fast! i grabbed civ 4 the other day and it took only half an hour! like larryhead said, i couldn't drive to best buy and buy the game any faster than that.

Oh...

My...

GOD.

Did you just say Civ 4?

I'm never going to leave my house, all winter long.

All this sounds somewhat complicated. Can a non-computer nerd figure it out? I don't want to waste my money.

oh yeah, it's very simple. once you've got the software installed and an account, it's just as simple as going to www.newzbin.com and either looking through their categories or searching the site. when you've found what you want, you just click a link and it gets everything going in your downloading program.

very, very simple.
