so, my driver's license is expiring in a few days, and i've got to go get an illinois one (i think i was technically supposed to get one a few years ago when i first moved to illinois, but oh well).

so anyways, to get your first license in illinois, you have to TAKE A WRITTEN EXAM, even if you already have a license from another state.

ARGHH!

i haven't looked at any of the 'rules of the road' crap in a dozen years. it's so boring! i haven't had to take a test of any kind in five years!

this sucks.

I had to do the same thing when I moved from Colorado to Missouri. I would snag one of those books if I were you. There is no way I would have passed it, if I didn't read the book before hand. If you read the book (even once) you should have no problem. I got a perfect score, but like I said, I wouldn't have passed if I hadn't read the book.

I don't think you have to take the test again, but you may need your Birth Certificate. I needed mine last time I renewed (which I was totally unprepared for!). I guess the Fed's just passed a mandate stating that you need a Birth Certificate even to renew. Probably a reaction to terrorism and illegal immigration.

dunno about you, but i had a pretty clean driving record (no recent tickets) when my renewal came up, and they just sent me a sticker to stick on the back of my license so that it is valid for four more years.. i didn't have to do shit otherwise, fortunately. pretty nice. maybe call up the DMV?

The birth certificate is a Missouri thing. My mother said that for women its even more strict that you have to bring in your marriage license.

I didn't have any trouble getting a license in Florida. Pay the little fee, take the vision test, bada bing, new drivers license. They even gave me the option to keep my Missouri one if I wanted to.

I think the rules vary from state to state.

I funny side note.

A few years ago matty worked at the dmv.
My sister went in while matty was working, she happened to be in his line. They got to chatting, matt processed all of her paperwork she renewed her license.

Well a month ago, she goes into the dmv, they have her take the vision test, she can't see a damn thing, apparently hasn't been able to see much and has been in denial. She even argued with the dmv freaks.

I think its funny, matty was just chatting along. they both skipped the vision test, my sister in the meantime is terrorizing people in the streets of Columbia with her bad vision, unaware.

chuckle.

What? She didn't kill anybody.

I had to turn down a number of old ladies at the DMV. Licenses REVOKED. I also loved to give sorority hos and fraternity rapists a hard time. My favorite thing to do was when they go to take the picture, I'd be like, "Okay, on the count of three. One...two...three...." and then I would wait a long time before I actually took the picture, so that they had a weird look on their faces.

My own small brand of justice.

SQ, are you serious about your mom needing extra id? isn't that super sexist? is it because she changed her name? that is some of the biggest bullshit i have heard in a long time, and there is always something to outrage women in the world. i think this is worth getting pissed off over.

My mom told me that the state of Missouri recently changed it for all ladies that have changed their name they have to bring in their birth certificate and their marriage license.

yeah when we went to the Bahamas, all of the women needed their birth certificate plus marriage certificate so that a clear link could be made between the birth certificate and the name on the driver's license. There was one lady who had been divorced three times, so she needed a Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Divorce Decree, Mariage Certificate, Divorce Decree, Marriage Certificate, Divorce Decree, Mariage Certificate. Talk about a pain in the ass. If a woman chooses to keep her last name, no additional paper work is necessary. The same would be true for a man, if he decided to change his name for any reason.

i've never been to the bahamas, but wouldn't a passport have worked just as well for that lady. maybe she should invest in one, instead of being subjected to this patriarchal crap.

Yes, a passport would have worked, but is not needed. She decided she would rather just bring the documentation than to pay $125.00 for a passport that she didn't need and would never use again. I am not sure how passports work. Our travel agent just told us that you have to be able to directly connect the name on your driver's license to the name on your birth certificate. Obviously, this is generally more of an ordeal for married/divorced women than for anybody else.

Precisely...which is why if I ever get married again, I'm keeping MY name.

The US recently changed the requirements for documentation to travel to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean islands. In order to visit the Caribbean after 12/06 you MUST have a passport.

The Canada and Mexico thing goes live at the end of 2007. You will be required to have a passport to go in out of Canada/Mexico.

You might as well get a passport. Its probably easier than carrying around a bunch of paperwork.

i asked my mom about this good old missouri issue, and she said that it stems from working out voter id issues, and that translated into a drivers id issue. so basically it seems to be boiling down to everything being a bigger pain in the ass for women to vote. which is just great. i think it is also disproportionally going to affect people who don't drive and have to get this id, and of course people who work too much to get to the dmv, or people who can't really afford the extra expense. wow - missouri, way to keep voting a privilege.

Yeah our travel agent told us that also. Fortunately it didn't affect us since we went before the deadline.

Unfortunately I think it is either put up with the paper work or get in line for the chip implant. That time is coming...soon.

well, for the record, i missed two questions (i got some signs mixed up), and laina, who hasn't had a license in five years, only missed one.

now i just have to get my city sticker renewed before saturday and i'll be in the clear...
