City shuts down Mars candy factory

Officials at the Chicago Public Health Department said they took the rarely used step of closing the M&M Mars Inc. candy factory on the city's West Side after the company did not correct problems discovered during a June 21 inspection.

Those problems include a fruit fly infestation in the candymaking area and gaps in overhead doors that could allow rodents and insects access to the production area. Inspectors also reported finding mouse feces in the food processing area and food items improperly stored on the floor rather than elevated.
The Oak Park Avenue plant produces Snickers, 3 Musketeers, Milky Way and Mars candy bars.
