What is your preferred liquor of choice?
Think of categories as generic 'family' categories.

Obviously, it depends on my mood. I like all sorts of different things. Wine, champagne, sake...

I also enjoy different sorts of liquor at different times. A martini; a vodka tonic; more recently - a bloody maria [delicious!].

But when the chips are down, what do you choose?

I choose the liquor that I haven't seriously hurt myself with recently.

irish whiskey. but i can't drink it cause i go nuts. but damn does it taste good.

pretty much now i drink bacardi and diet coke [jack black voice] "cause i'm trying to watch my weight!"

vodka used to be my choice.

then, there was the evening with the lemon drop shots (shining_path and larryhead might remember that night... or maybe not!)

now i'm a whiskey man, and trying desperately to not ruin myself on it, too!

i'm pretty sure that every drink gets ruined at one point or another, but so long as you don't kill yourself in the meantime, you can always return to it later as a more responsible drinker. at least this is what i keep telling myself. and so far it has held true. whiskey used to have it out for me, but now we are casual friends. i think it helps when you buy the really expensive stuff and learn to "enjoy the flavor." sip, sip, sip.

although, i'm almost strictly a beer drinker, i've been drinking the occasional gin or tequila lately--gin as a sipper, and tequila in shot form. used to be, whiskey was the only spirit enjoyed.

I like all these liquors, depending on the situation.

I like Tanqueray gimlets in the summer. (A proper gimlet is NOT made with vodka)

If I want something sweet, Maker's Mark and Coke hits the spot! But whiskey makes me rowdy.

I like Absolut with anything. Used to be a big vodka tonic fan, but in the past year I lost my taste for tonic water, somehow. Now I like peach Stoli and soda water (NOT tonic water). Suprisingly good drink: pepper vodka and soda with a bit of lime. Not the sort of thing you want to drink all night, though. It's more of a one-with-dinner kind of drink.

Margaritas are good! But I gotta watch the tequila. Some of you may remember a night during which I thought it was a good idea to consume two very strong tequila sunrises on an empty stomach. Then I ran around JVO's boss's house like an idiot, nearly stepping on that poor little dog, before finally puking my guts out in that awesome bathroom.

Recently I have discovered the wonder that is Sparks.

So, ummm, yeah...I like to drink:o

give us some good tequila drink recipes then SQ, i wouldn't mind knowing a few. its just that they usually seem to be sweet. i don't do sweet drinks, i'm a soda water fan, not a tonic fan, and anything with coke is not for me. the only sweet i like is a mojito now and then. yuummm, mojitos......... there is a brazilian drink similar to a mojito that i can't remember the name of that isn't sweet and super limey - its good. anyone know what i am talking about?

Don't like sweet but like tequila? Try a Prairie Fire at your next stop to the local watering hole. Simple: tequila shot infused with Tabasco sauce. The flames cancel each other out... well, not really. Just burns two different ways. But worth the jump.

As for the Brazilian drink, I can't recall the name but I've had it recently. If you try to build one at home, you are likely to imbalance it in favor of the cane-based alcohol, making it reactive to an open flame. But it's certainly different if you are tired of the more commonplace American concoctions.

Here are a few tequila drinks that I enjoy.
Only use high-quality tequila [I prefer Cabo Wabo].
The first one is my fave.
Give these a try :

Caballo

6 oz ice cold grapefruit juice
1.5 oz tequila
1 oz amaretto-- Pour into tall 14 oz. glass with ice. Stir well. Add ice to fill.

Blackberry Tequila

1.5 oz tequila
1 oz blackberry liqueur
.5 oz lemon juice
1/2 cup of crushed ice
1 slice of lemonCombine in old-fashioned glass. Add ice cubes if desired. Garnish with lemon slice.

Wild Thing

1.5 oz tequila
1 oz cranberry juice
.5 oz lime juice
1 oz club soda [or to fill]
1 slice limePour over ice into old-fashioned glass. Garnish with lime slice.

About 15 minutes away from Boston by car, but car is the only way to get there. It's alright though, in Woburn I have my choice of eating at Applebees or TGI Fridays every night. yeah.

Big fan of mojitos here. They are delicious & pack a punch. Almost drank a few last nite, but the restaurant we wanted to go to was slammed. Settled on Mex & Margaritas instead.

They make some pretty mean Mojitos here in Miami. I've never made them at home - I never have mint on hand. Same with Mint Juleps. I guess I need to spring for some mint sometime...

I'm so-so on mojitos... they are good on occasion on a hot summer day, but I don't really care for the mint leaves floating around.

Has anyone ever tried a mint julep? Just wondering if those are a lot like mojitos?

LH - I've made Mint Juleps a few times. Similar premise to Mojitos except with Whiskey instead of Rum. Pretty tasty & the quintessential cocktail for consumption during the Kentucky Derby. Mmm...minty.

WHAT? are you crazy? Mint Juleps rock! We make them form scratch every Kentucky Derby and since my family is form Kentucky we got this bad ass single barrel bourbon to put it them. That is a drink for champions and true drinkers. I mean its straight bourbon with a little sweet mint stuff.

Anyway I love Tequila shots and ritas

But when I go out to drink at bars and the like (since you cant get a tequila worth a shit and if you do its hella expensive) I drink Frosties!!!

Frosty= Jim Beam + Diet Coke
Yes it has to be diet. I dont drink diet coke cuz it taste like ass but the sweetness of the JB makes up for it. The theory is this: when I go out drinking I like to stick with one alcohol, we all know that is best. Well to get loaded I need many drinks. So I figure that if I have like 8-10 drinks in a night that all have the sugar form normal coke that will really mess your system up. So the diet eliminates the sugar problem that way i dont have a hang over and my body isn't all pissed off that I put 10times the amount of sugar in it that i normally do. :drunk:

God, im not sure why you thought you offended me but dont worry about it I dont take the board that seriously. Differences in opinions are what make this board so interesting, but what you might want to avoid is implying that people are assholes or confused men depending on which you were referring that I was. Im not upset by your comments but we keep things pretty civil here. If you wish to make generalizations about my character I would prefer if you would do it in a pm next time, especially since we are not familiar with each other.

Really its not that I disagree with you that people that drink mint juleps turn into assholes or confused people......that does happen when lots of straight bourbon is consumed. But the drink is awesome and hella tasty if you like bourbon and it gets you really messed up real quick which would be why i am so fond of it :dizzy:.

I will attempt to avoid these things, but I make no promises. I write as I speak, and most of the time I need to think more than I speak. Those who do not know me cant hear the sarcasm that verily drips from almost every word. Here here. Only so much you can do with vodka and vermouth. Well, actually, a martini is the only thing you can do successfully with those two, but I'm intrigued by the prospect of introducing other elements.

A good mixer company: Stirrings. They do good, primarly all natural, mixers. Costs about ten clams for a mixer and they do stuff like pomegranate martinis, apple martinis, mojitos (mint oil, for those of you who don't appreciate contending with mint leavees), and others. Decent stuff.

My wife and I recently discovered something called a Mellon Tree (might be proprietary - I don't know). Mellon liquer, coconut rum, 2 dashes of lime juice, and the rest is pineapple juice. Que bueno.

Pound for pound, though, mojitos are probably the way to go.
