so hotfoot and i began our basketball season in the Mt Prospect C League last night. (chukes is also on the team, for those who know him.) our team name is Cemetery Cough. conditioning was a concern coming in. hotfoot, our point guard, was quoted in the pregame as stating that he hadn't "touched a basketball since january and smokes like a fiend." i, our shooting guard, had been off my feet for two weeks cuz of a minor procedure on my toe. add to that that we were playing with just 7 of our 9 players and that as a team we had never played once together (many peeps met each other for the first time last night), and you had a recipe for disaster. oddsmakers had us as a 15-point underdog entering our opener vs a team called MF Rocks.

but that's why they play the game.

i stroked a 3 to open the scoring from the field, and cemetery cough never looked back. though i went cold after that and finished with just 5 points, i had no turnovers (a rare feat for me), and hotfoot (who i believe finished with 8 points, though i don't remember any assists) and the others picked up the slack, hitting their free throws and playing tough D to lead us to a 39-34 victory. a low-scoring affair, but we led bell to bell, i think, and we'll take the W any way we can get it.

cemetery cough record: 1-0. tied for first place.

we may have faced a team straight out of like Deloitte & Touche's IT department, but we pretty much buried those dudes. the final score was closer than the game was.

week 2 saw us match up against a team called "fine line." they were ancient. we played like shit. ugly 45-35 victory for cemetery cough. i went 2-8 for 4 points and played like shit all around. hotfoot struggled with his shot a bit this week. dunno how he finished. chukes looks terrified of shooting the ball at this point. our forwards combined for about 30 points and we'd've been fucked without em.

saw the team we play next week. they're tall as hell but not very good otherwise. i think they'll be flustered if we D up.

cemetery cough record: 2-0. tied for first place (three-way).

first place was fun while it lasted. we had to deal with the last-minute scratch of one of our starting five this week. we lined up with just six guys against a team of giants called the saints. though we played tough for much of the game, our big men had to play basically 40 minutes and we got into foul trouble. when hotfoot and chukes fouled out with just a couple minutes to play, we had to go 4-on-5. the saints finished on a 14-4 run and handed us our first loss, 49-41 (i believe).

i went 1-6 with 3 points and no assists. for some reason i found myself matched against their best player defensively for much of the game, and he gave me a lotta problems. i got pushed around on the boards but made up for it by being slow in transition.

great, wasted efforts from both hotfoot and chukes. both shot well and poured in around 10 points with solid D. hotfoot also had the shot of the night, a driving, off-balance, 15-footer through a buncha traffic, some real sportscenter shit.

next week, we try to get back in the W column against the flying peroguis, whom no one's seen. they've probably got like james worthy on their team or something.

cemetery cough record: 2-1. second place.

Wow, that makes me feel old!

James Worthy played on the showtime Lakers with Kareem and Magic. Also play at UNC with Michael Jordan.

I think it is totally cool y'all are in a bb league. I was never much of a bb player but I would love to play a little fast pitch softball. I'm thinking about starting a bowling league.

Chimpo how much does that cost? Is your league co-ed? How many players? 5 who play and then a couple of alternates? How long does one "season" last? Do you bowl 3 games a night? Take about 3 hours?

it's more a commentary on chimpo's sports ignorance than your age JVO. although he is a bit of a baby now that i think of it.

the league's a lotta fun dude, even though i've been playing so poorly personally. haven't had a competitive outlet that mattered to me in so long. it feels great. and i'd forgotten how much i loved the game.

bowling leagues are a blast too yo.

chimpo: 8 teams, 7-game reg season, 3 weeks of "positioning" to determine the final standings. so 10 games altogether.

the flying peroguis didn't have james worthy on their team. cemetery cough tatooed 'em 57-32, including a 22-0 run to start the game. great effort all around, with numerous pretty fast breaks and lights-out perimeter shooting from one of our guards, jerry. always nice when you can laugh about hotfoot airballing a free throw. schedule gets tougher from here on out. i'm hopin i can miraculously improve to help us against some of the tough teams coming up.

cemetery cough record: 3-1. second place.
