Hey all...So I've decided to make a posting of all the different wines that I try and leave a rating on them. I'm going to be rating them based out of 10 stars. I will also be trying a wide variety of wines. For those of you that know my tastes in wines, I think you'll appreciate the ratings. For those that don't, I'm a very picky rater. I will not rate previously tasted bottles. Only those from this point forward.

The main idea of this post is to find a bottle of wine that is under $20 that is superb. Of course, that is my underlying goal at all times when drinking wines.

I will add other, more expensive wines to this listing along the way. I recommend you to try these same wines and provide your own input. I am not perfect and will gladly take some insights.

Let's get to finding that perfect bottle.

Label: Don Quixote
Year: 1998
Type: Valdepennas Gran Reserva (Spanish Rioja)
Price: $13.99
Star Rating: 6.5/10 stars

Thoughts: This wine has a good character. It isn't overly biting for a Rioja, but it has that very smooth taste that a Grand Reserve always gives. Its not exquisite, as I feel its missing the complexity in flavors that I desire. However, for a $14 bottle, it gives the impression of being a more expensive bottle.

Recommendation: Give it a try. Its bold enough to be worthy of a second tasting.

I've been sipping on Strade Vecchie - Toscana [Sangiovese 90%, Cab 10%].

Its very good. Full-bodied & a little peppery with a long finish. I'd rate it 7/10. I had it with SQ's delicious minestrone the other nite. Worked well. Would be good with any red Italian dinner.

Under $20.

Whatever happened to this thread Poof?

Domaine de Regusse - Viognier
7/10
<$15

Tasty white wine. Fruity without overbearing sweetness. Slightly tart with mild wood tones.
Would be good with fish, white sauce, white cheese...

Label: Boone's Farm
Year: 2006
Flavor: Strawberry
Price: $2.99 (buy one get one free on Thursdays)
Star Rating: 1/10 for wine, 10/10 for alcoholic soda

Tastes like strawberries. Drink enough, and you'll get fucked up. All the taste of strawberry soda, but now with alcohol!!

This thread makes me laugh. I think words used in descriptions for wines are hilarious.

Reminds me of the coffee scene in Austin Powers, where he diagnoses it as "a bit nutty".

Let's rate some fuckin' beer!

Hilarious!

Seriously though, I always visualized Zero as a wine drinker. I could always picture his house with a big wine cellar in the basement. I was wrong.

I've been getting into a lot of wine lately. I have a friend that works at the liquor store & he recommends tasty & affordable wines. Mmm...

I understand that wine drinkers can be pretentious, but not all of us are that way. I'm not so discriminating that it ruins the experience. I just enjoy the finer things.

Rate some beers? Go for it. See the Top Ten Beers thread. Did you make your top ten list, Zero?

I'm just being a smartass. Couldn't help myself.

Reading the descriptions just took me back to my last trip to Hermann, MO where we did a wine tasting and tour of the St. James and Hermanoff Wineries.... some little 100 year old woman was waxing and waning poetic about the full bodied smoky flavor yada yada. All I knew was that I liked the "white" over the "red", and stay away from Port's and Sherry's (blah). I'm a big fan of the local Vignoles ("white") put out by St. James, Hermanoff, and about every other MO Winery (fruity, grapefruit taste... very light).

I don't know what Vignoles means, all I know is that its Tasty, and that's all I care to know!

I do like wine from time to time, but I try and stick to the local Missouri Winery varieties, to support the local econ. Wine gives me a very relaxed mellow buzz, so I have to be in the right mood for it.

Haven't rated my favorite beers and haven't seen that thread. Just started reading the board again, so I'll have to get caught up.

missouri wine is coming along. i am going to stock up on a couple of bottles while i am home.

i have been trying to educate myself in the wine world for a while now. mostly i don't understand what the important parts of the label are, like what is each term referring to. when it is in a different language i am at a loss. of course i understand the grape varietals, and regions, but there is so much more than that.

my local wine store helps me out though. i go in with a few words of what i am looking for and they know what i mean. i think i just need to take a class and get on track...sniff sniff swhirl swig spit

and the whole wording thing. it is a professional language and each term has a very specific meaning for other wine lovers. i find it fascinating.

recently though i have been really getting into sake. there are so many different kinds that i can easily get around here, the experimenting has been fun to say the least!

My sister and I went to the Herman Wine tasting a couple years ago and completely made jackasses out of ourselves. My sister kept complaining because there was no place to spit and I would let a little dribble out of my mouth like blood. I don't think the 100 year old lady approved of our humor very much, but we had the entire room rolling. When we got done I grabbed about 6 of the taster cups that nobody drank (all of different wines) and poored them all into a big wine glass and slurped it down in one big gulp. I then proceded to tell the lady that was the best wine I have ever had. Don't think she appreciated it very much. My mom was completely embarrassed and yelled at us like we were 5 year old kids (this really made everybody laugh) so for the rest of the tasting we donned obnoxious French accents and pretended to be the most pretentious people we could think of.

good times.
