i dunno man they just goin. dude just told me their last day here's a week from this friday. looks like they just weren't making enough money and they figured movin to the city was their best chance to keep it goin and promote the joint in other ways:
For over 17 years Record Breakers has been proud to serve Chicagoland from its Hoffman Estates location. In the next few months we will be closing down and moving to 21st and State in the city. We will also be opening up 2 separate venues for live music located right next to the store. One of the venues will be all ages and the other will be inside a tavern strictly 21 and over. We will try to bring as much good new music both local and national as possible. We know that we have been an icon of sorts in the northwest suburbs and we will miss being one of the few good indie shops in the suburbs. However, we feel it is vital to be able to have live shows for the store to feed off of in this day of technology with ipods and downloads. The live venues will allow Record Breakers to flourish and keep the extensive eclectic inventory that you deserve and crave. We will also be able to do creative promotions such as record release parties, in stores, and label showcases. We will keep you updated with the progress of the new location and we welcome your feedback to our new venture.
Thanks for everything,
Breakers
i blame talking sandwich!
well, maybe if it actually does turn into a new venue i'll still get to go once in a while.
still, i feel like when i came back from michigan and the machine had closed.

for one, i'm a sentimental person. if you don't know this, you've apparently never met me. i've been going to the joint for 12 or 13 years. i've wasted dozens of afternoons just standing and listening to shit and browsing there. so it's a physical space i'm fond of and have had a buncha good experiences at and now it's going away. i don't need any more reason than that but i'll give you more anyway cuz it's best to throw as much at your underdeveloped brain as possible in the futile hope that something'll stick.
for two, online shopping sucks. i don't always shop for music by selecting a half dozen albums i want on my doorstep 10 to 14 days from now. and i don't download. i like the experience of poking through record shops on a whim and finding an album i've wanted for months or years. for some reason that's a better experience for me than a button click. when i found out they were leaving and in a panic started browsing for something to buy to redeem all my punch cards over the years and found the glifted album i been tryin to get for two or three years but haven't cuz it wasn't available on amazon and i didn't wanna direct order just one CD from the label and i couldn't find it anywhere else--that was a triumphant feeling. and i'll probably never have it again.
for three, it means the chains win: they've successfully driven out a good independent biz, one with character, originality, and a superior selection. (after a few down years, record breakers's had a real nice selection again these past couple.) i tend not to root for the chains. now it's, like, best buy if i feel like getting something new that same day, rather than in the time it takes a site to mail it to me. the majority of the time they won't carry what i'm looking for, and even if they do they probably won't let me listen to it before i buy it.
for four, you're a dickhole.

touché, but if you didn't know i was fucking with you, than you've obviously never met me.
this might be a good thing, dude. i know it sucks that they're moving into the city, and therefore farther away from you, but shit maybe they'll get better digs...and think about your love of their CDs extending to the possible great indie shows they might be able to bring in...i seriously think it's a great tradeoff.
i wish we'd had another 15 on that whirly ball court, you mofucker!

interesting that they're moving to the south loop. probably a smart move since the neighborhoods south of like Taylor are filling up with hipsters. that's sad sad, though. i'll miss the old joint.
perhaps you ought to look into purchasing living quarters in the south loop. there're townhomes there.

i don't think the chains are to blame. with tower records just going down, i think we all know the real culprit is dowloads. brick and mortar small shops are probably going to be the last places to buy actual cd's in the end. i bet the chains stop selling them in the not to distant future.
i myself still love going into those shops. i am lucky to live next to a few. i hope they hold out.

you know i agree with you....about chimpo being a dickhole that is. kidding
i think i remember jordan telling me that he knows the guy booking the shows for the venue that they are going to open.
still sad though. i too will miss that place. good memories. like assassin eating a moth to get two bucks off of his cd.

Where I live in Davis chain stores are ban. I must say its so nice to interact with small business owners who are pasionate about their community. I know a number of owners of some of my favorite stores here in town and until I moved here I had never experienced that. Shopping was such a pain in the ass before and now I look forward to walking through the streets and popping into one of my favorite stores to say whats up to the staff and see what new thinngs they got in. Personally buying form some of the large chain stores to me is the same as buying on the internet except I dont have to move my lazy ass form my home and fight trafic so Im happier :)
