Yup, it's true. Last Sunday Paula and I went over to the anti-cruelty shelter and picked up a cute little brown tabby named Daisy (might change her name though - reminds me of my parent's dog of the same name). She is four years old and very nice and likes to sleep on me. I'd post a pic, but she won't stay still for the camera, heheh. :cat:
Originally, I was thinking we should get a little puppy, but I must admit not having to get up and walk her in the cold Chicago winter and pick-up after they go is sounding *very* appealing to me right now :)
Are you a cat person or dog person? (I'm a dog person for sure, always had one growing up). If I ever move out of the city, I'm definitely getting a little dog too.

your cat is super cute. i love when they have strong chins and noses, i think it makes them extra handsome. plus, the gray tabby is the only kind of cat i have ever had, so i always have favorable reactions to them.
and my hat is off to you both for getting an older cat. i think that is great - more people should do that.
right now i am petless though. someday i will definately have another dog, and probably a couple of cats as my fella really likes them too. until then, i will just pacify myself with hanging out with other's pets.

Thanks!
So kitty kat is sick and needs to take a pill once a day. Seriously, have you ever tried to give a cat a pill.. holy shit, it's damn near impossible. I was holding her under my arm trying to do it last night and she freaked out and gouged my hand pretty good.. ouch. And then she was drooling everywhere because I think she chewed it instead of swallowing it and it foamed up everwhere. Blech.
Any tips SQ or Ag Au? She is supposed to take one a day for a month :help:

Wear gloves, long sleeve shirt.
Its a 2 man job. I would suggest rolling the cat in a blanket so that only the head and front paws can be seen.
One person holds the cat. The other person has the pill in one hand, the other hand quickly opens the kitties mouth. Put it to the side of the mouth and to the back of the throat. This way your cat will automatically swallow and the pill will be gone.
Otherwise if you try to jam it through the front teeth, the cat will just spit it out and make you pay a price.
does your medicine come in droplet form?

Great tips, thanks SQ!
We are going to check if there is a droplet version, because this is going to be a huge pain in the ass I can tell.

I had droplets with a lil' squeezy thing (looked like a mini-turkey baster). Open, aim, fire.

My kitty has to take a liquid form of an antibiotic sometimes because her stomach gets upset, and this is how I administer it:
I sit on a chair or on the couch, hold her by putting her middle in between my legs/knees, with one hand squeeze her mouth where cheeks would be to get her to open her mouth, and carefully squirt it in with the other. She won't take it any other way, unfortunately, and she usually walks around angrily and spitting afterwards, but it's worth it when she no longer has those stomach issues.
Yeah, I used to have a cat that needed pills at one time. He would throw an insane fit, but the worst was that as I tried to push the pill into his mouth, he would start foaming and slobbering so bad, his whole face would be wet, then his body. He would thrash and get slippery and the pill would get slippery and I never could get him to take it.
My girlfriend is a vet-tech, and so I asked her what I should have done about it, and how to get cats that need pills to take them. She said "some cats are just damn impossible". This is from someone who works with animals all day, gets bitten on a regular basis, and is afraid of nothing.
I say get liquid stuff if you can. Let the cat get hungry, then hide it in some tuna or wet cat food. I have never gotten force to work when giving cats medicine.

i love that game.
1,172 feet. 45.5 degrees at full power and some lucky explosives and balloons.
Any luck with the medicine, LH?
How's the cat adjusting to the new environment?
The real trick with medicine is - you can't be nice about it. You've really got to grab the scruff of the neck & hold 'em down. The second person is the key.
Definitely a cat person here. We always had dogs when I was younger, but we lived out in the country where they had room to roam. Living in the city, its nice to have a cat because they don't need a lot of space. Also, when SQ & I recently went to Chi/Minn for 4 days, we just left a bunch of food & water out & the cats took care of themselves. Couldn't do that with a dog. I like the self-sustaining side of cats. Dogs are loyal, but very needy.

Our kitty's adjusting well to her new habitat, but we haven't started the medicine yet because Paula and I are out of town for a few days right now (visiting friends of hers in Elizabeth City, NC.... friggin' gorgeous here!). I figured it was best to start that whole pill regime when we get back, but I'm not looking forward to it! Also we have a friend checking up on here while we're away, so I don't think we could've paid him enough to play cat doctor for the weekend.
Thanks everyone for the helpful tips!

Hahah. I seriously doubt you're gonna find a crazy nightlife there. :)
From what I could tell, the downtown is still very rural and old fashioned with mostly small boutiques and a Mom & Pop general store... it sorta reminded me of the town where Slam's folks live (can't remember the name).
And along the water there it's pretty scenic and relaxing after being stuck in the city for so long. Nice weather too in the upper 60's.
Hey, I never said it was happening.. just get a handle of whiskey and stroll around downtown for a bit, and you'll have fun eventually :D

Hey Larryhead! I realized I haven't logged on here in ages....
Anyway, I'm a total cat person (love doggies too) and my three felines have had many UTI's over the years which equals TONS of pills. I don't know if you've found a solution for your kitty yet but I have a couple of tips. They make a thing called a pill popper. It's awesome cause you can get the pill straight to the back of the throat and the little plunger mechanism also shoots it back there. Or, if your kitty is like one of mine, who is impossible and takes chunks out of you, crush up the pill and mix it with canned cat food. You can do the same with the liquid too. Some of the more difficult variety of cats can still taste the meds in the food and won't touch it. That's when you beat them senseless and then shove it down their throat. Totally kidding.
Good luck! And congrats on your new cutie.

Yeah, definitely can't be nice about giving them medicine.
I have to wrap Bosie in a blanket or towel and make a little papoose, so that only his face is exposed. Then I lay on top of him (keeping my face away from his face!) and lean on him until he can't even wiggle his tail. Only when I am convinced the little bastard can't move to I shove the pill in. He won't fall for the pill hidden in food thing, so this is the only way I can do it. He gets pissed off and hides for an hour, and then he comes back around like nothing happened.
