You may be right, but we will see.

I am still in a complete state of shock. I can't believe the Cards made the playoffs, let alone the World Series. Really the same is true with the Tigers.

Play Ball!!!!!

i'd also like to say that both starting pitchers, perez (viva mexico!) and suppan, showed serious balls last night (from what i saw). and i was impressed with wainright's stuff; his curve was better than i expected. i'd been reading about him since his days as a braves prospect, so i was always a little curious.

Yeah, I have been on the Wainright bandwagon the entire year. He has a mid 90's fast ball and an Uncle Charlie curve. When he throws both for strikes he is viturally unhittable. I wonder if they are going to make him a closer full time now? I hope not, I would really like to see him as a starting pitcher, but we all know how La Russa is about Closers. I think he would rather have a great closer than a great starting pitcher.

i dunno if it was fox's gun or if he threw a coupla changeups last night, but he had a coupla offspeed pitches with less break that missed but looked like quality pitches.

my only thing is i wonder if he'd retain that mid-90s velocity as a starter. he retired some talented and experienced players last night with two runners on; i don't see la russa fucking with it.

Yeah he has a slider that he will occasionaly throw (I think that is what you are talking about). He only throws it once in awhile. Not sure why he decided to throw so many last night.

Yeah (he is crazy submarineer right?). If so he did pitch in the 7th inning last night. He plays for the Mets though.

Wainright only pitches in the 9th inning (for St. Louis). He is super tall, has a pretty conventional style, but throws a wicked curve ball.

No World Series tickets for me.

He IS super-tall. I think he's the tallest pitcher on the Cardinals' roster. He's like, 6'8" or something. When the Fox guy was interviewing Wainwright last night, he looked almost twice the commentator's size.

Okay, I looked it up. He's actually 6'7". But he is the Cardinals' tallest player.

I don't know if you know this, FA, but I have heard (from a slightly dubious source) that fiddup "is a middup on a piddup with a siddup." The same source also repeated the chant "fiddup-middup-piddup-siddup."

Hope that helps!!!

You totally had that pegged.

All of the Gambler's bitching and moaning and fist pumping and all that crap got pretty annoying after awhile. Of course as long as nobody scores I suppose he can do whatever he wants.

I don't think he was really bitching and moaning. More like he was yelling at himself.

I listen to ESPN Radio all day, and they are going crazy about the brown substance on Rogers hand. I wasn't that worried about it last night, but now they kinda have me pissed off about it. I guess they have pictures of some black/brown substance under the bill of his hat. It wasn't there in the first inning, but as soon as he had to clean his hands it suddenly appears.

very suspicious.

Do you think he accidentally had a big glob of brown stuff on his pitching hand prior to a World Series start without knowing it? I guess it is possible, but if it was not illegal why did they make him wash it off? And if it was illegal enough to make him wash his hand, why was it not illegal enough to kick him out of the game? And then why did another brown spot suddenly appear on his hat, only after he washed his hands? Again I wasn't that worried about it, but every single ESPN talking head has been going on and on with their conspiracy theories and I think I am starting to buy into them. Even Peter Gammons said that it was "extremely suspicious and alarming and needs to be looked in to". Not sure what they can do about now, but I predict if this goes to a Game 6, Tony LaRussa is going to be on his ass the entire game. I guess Seleg just announced that he is going to begin an investigation. Not sure what they can do about it anyway. Maybe suspend him for the remainder of the playoffs? If La Russa and Jim Lealand weren't such good friends, I think he would have made a much bigger deal out of it. One way or the other, I hope he wasn't cheating. It would be a pity to have a marquis player caught cheating in the World Series. Baseball has enough problems as it is.

I think the dude is pretty superstitious. I beleive he is one of the weirdos that steps over the foul line. If thats the case, maybe he got dirt on his hand during a big win, now does it every game. I don't know that I am neccessarily ready to defend the guy, just a thought.

First of all, yes, I believe it's entirely possible to have a brown spot on your hand before the World Series. Mix a little resin with dirt plus intense concentration on the ball game and you could easily miss the spot. That spot can easily be transferred by touching one's hat.

Most importantly, though, I simply don't believe that anyway is stupid enough to pull some obvious shit like that in the World Series. I mean, are people really claiming Rogers was told by an umpire to remove the shit and his response to was put more of it inside of his hat? No way. That's ludicrous. If even LaRussa's calling it a non-issue it should be.

I am not saying that he cheated only that it was suspicious. I guess there was an Astro's pitcher about 10 years ago who got caught juicing the ball in the NLCS (after he had 18 scoreless innings). Can't remember his name (something Scott?) but it would not be unprecedented. Also, I think we should all be able to agree that Kenny Rogers is a complete wack job. Very good pitcher, and I happen to like all athletes who beat down the media, but still he doesn't strike me as the most logical or ethical person in the world.
Anyway the Nationwide consensus is definitely that he was cheating. Which, if he wasn't, is too bad. If he was, I hope he is kicked out of baseball.

From Wikipedia:

On October 22, 2006 in the second game of the World Series between the Detroit Tigers and the St. Louis Cardinals, Tiger's pitcher Kenny Rogers was accused of using Pine Tar in the first inning of the game. Rogers refused to address the incident other then to say it was a large clump of dirt on his hand. However in the earlier series against the Oakland Athletics there was a similar mark on his hand leading many people to believe that in fact it was pine tar.

yeah..i'm not entirely sure I believe in his innocence, but if the Cards management isn't gonna make a big deal out of it, then I won't either. We still shoulda hit him hard....I place Kenny Rogers in the same category as Tom Glavine, a soft throwing location pitcher....I think we'll get to him in another game just like we did against Glavine....

however, if its proved that he had pine tar....he should be suspended and reputation tarnished.

btw, pine tar's pretty prevalent in baseball. lotsa pitchers use it so they can better grip the ball. if kenny actually used it, he certainly wouldn't be the only one.

True, but it would have been a good excuse to have him booted out of the game. My hunch is that Jim Leland has some dirt (no pun intended) on some RedBird players and La Russa knew that if he made a stink about Rogers, that Leland would call out all of our players who bend the rules. A lot of the current Redbirds were scouted by Leland during the handful of years that he was with the Cards so I am sure that he knows lots of dirt. I just can't think of any other reason why La Russa didn't go crazy.

Something I've thought about. What if Larussa did not say anything to protect the game from another controversy. Fans are finally coming back to baseball, and most importantly fans in the minor market midwest. One more controversy would set baseball back another five years in terms of fna base. I myself ate, drank, breathed, slept baseball when I was a kid, the strikes happened and cya later. The sox series sort of drew me in late last year(YEAH FA and MRJCHIMPO Im given props) Now this season we get teams like the cardinals and the tigers drawing thousands of midwesterners back to the sport. I think Larussa was keeping quite for the love of the game. He knows pitchers use pine tar, and sees it as hey everybodys doing it, so lets not cheapen the game by exposng one player. Just a thought.

Cuscus you are exactly right. I just heard an interview with La Russa and he basically said the exact same thing. He said that pine tar is used all the time and that it really wasn't a big deal. All he cared about was that is get cleaned off, but that it was not serious enough to stop the game and call out the pitcher.

I don't know that I agree with any of that, but you are definitely correct in you assessment.
