"For a couple of thousand years, smokers have sought a quick concentration boost by firing up a cigarette.
It turns out that cognitive buzz isn't just in smokers' heads. Scientists have found that nicotine really does boost certain transmitters in the brain that can help people think better. Now, the pharmaceutical industry hopes to improve on the effect, minus the lung cancer."

I read an article in Newsweek a few years ago that stated that smokers are more intellegent than non smokers. According to the article, some of the chemicals (aka poisons) in cigs help to clean plaque off of your brain. Smokers by in large have a better memory, a higher i.q. and are less likely to experience mental problems as they get older (assuming they get older). Of course the trade off is probably not worth the benefits.
I don't know how many people listen to coast to coast am late at night. It is the crazy show that always interviews people who still believe the world is flat, or that aliens have been living here for decades or some other non-sense. Anyway I listened to it last Saturday night while driving home and they had a doctor on who claimed that Cigarrette smoking is actually healthy for you and that everything else being equal smokers are healthier than non smokers. He said that in France and Germany people are actually encouraged to smoke in small amounts (under a pack a day), but in the US the insurance and medical lobbies have scewed the side effects of cigarettes. Probably horse crap, but interesting to listen to.

JVO...i don't know that i buy the argument smokers are more intelligent. i think its in the same logic as...drinkers are typically more intelligent than non-drinkers. it correlates highly to people being more educated typically drink and smoke more due to the whole college/univ experience. correlations are interesting to make, but not always a sign of causation.
but i like this theory.
