If you could go back in time and witness any historical event, what would it be, and why?

this question reminds me of the crichton book Timeline. yeah, the movie sucked really bad, but the book was pretty good. there was this funny scene where the dudes that invented the time travel were all morose cause they thought they'd get rich selling these "time tours" but they went back to all these historical events and like lincoln at the gettysburg address kept stumbling over all his words and had a high pitched voice and was a horrible public speaker. and george washington got seasick while crossing the potomac and shit like that.

what would i want to see? probably the resurrection (okay okay or lack thereof for you heathens) of Jesus, or some other event from around that time, you know, just to see. ...course i wouldn't be able to understand what anyone was saying. as for the why - well, his life i think affected the world like no other, for good or bad depending on your viewpoint, so i think that's reason enough.

i'd go back in time and watch chimpo watching the resurrection cuz seeing that kid cooling out in a tomb with, like, an our lady peace shirt and a resurrection mix CD he made just for the event would be funny. and when he saw me show up he'd laugh inappropriately loudly cuz he's a boisterous sort, and then i'd have to scold him in a loud whisper to keep it down.

on the real i'd probably go back and check one of the great battles--thermopylae, waterloo, midway, some crusades shit, maybe moscow in WWII. something like that. it'd revolt and fascinate me at the same time.

the above assumes i'd be invulnerable, of course.

otherwise i'd check out something where i could get the answer to a great unsolved mystery (not the robert stack kind), like witnessing how the JFK killing went down or seeing who jack the ripper was or something like that.

Chimpo stole my thunder. I would like to go back and witness one of Jesus' miracles. I suspect if Jesus raised Lazarus right in front of me, it would have a monumental impact on my life.

It would also be fun to check out Woodstock.

jesus would be a fun choice, if i actually believed that jesus was a real person who performed miracles. i'd probably just end up watching a charismatic man preach wholesome values, then come back to the present to try to explain to the christians why they're soooo off base.

so many good options. i think the constitutional convention, with the founding fathers laying down democracy, would be pretty impressive to listen in on.

woodstock would be fun, though.

great question. i'm constantly thinking about this concept, although i'm usually thinking about seeing things rather than events. like i would love to see detroit in like 1953, or my neighborhood in the early 70s. event-wise, though, i'm pretty sure i'd like see parts of the french revolution, or europeans/americans taking slaves from africa, or the creation of the declaration of independence.

I would like to watch the building of the Great Pyramids in Egypt. We will never really know who built them or why they are there. The more they unearth in the area the more questions it raises.
Woodstock could be fun.

Ooh good call on the places. I would really like to see the mill village where my dad grew up in North Carolina. Now its this tiny run down street of houses, but it sounded like a hub of activity when he was growing up. Mill villages are really interesting to me. otherwise events I would like to see.....watch Ayerton Senna race, Colombus' boat rolling up on the new world, the building of the great wall, shit the list would be long.

If you could go back in time and witness any historical event, what would it be, and why?

Off the top of my head, here are some historical events I'd like to have witnessed:

* The first Beatles performance in the United States - the British Invasion begins, changing music forever

February 9, 1964 - The Beatles perform on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and are watched by a record-setting 73 million people (23,240,000 households, according to A.C. Nielsen). They perform five songs, "All My Loving," "Till There Was You," "She Loves You," "I Saw Her Standing There" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand."

* The assassination of Ceasar, Lincoln, Kennedy, Lennon and Christ - all events that changed the world, but what would it be like to be there with that knowledge?

* The first stone being laid at Stonehenge - one of the world's great mysteries.

* The Big Bang - come on, who doesn't want to witness THAT? :)

I would like to see the United States before all the white men came and brought civilization. 1400-1500's or so.

don't know about any specific event (mainly because there are too many) but i've always said that if i could see a time period i'd like to see the U.S. in the 1920's. probably in chicago of course. but i'm sure i could settle for new york.

Oh shit I completely forgot about that, you and Kris poured beer all over each other in the dark shitty college party. I think that was the same night, but I cant be sure. Either way, good memory.

that sucked... i was pretty drunk with notorious and we were leaving the bar, when this frat dude started talking shit behind our backs... so i turned around and called him a "big stupid monkey head" in front of everybody (while holding my arms above my head to show him just how big his dumb head was)... and then he came outside and head-butted me with that giant melon of his and gave me a bloody nose. i was sore for a week afterwards. :disgust:

good memories, lol.

Yeah, I'd want to see what I looked like when I was in a cage with a 300lb black dude at a dance club in Austin. I was dancing to Ol' Dirty Bastard's "Baby I Got Your Money". So you know it was my 23rd Birthday and I was REALLY fucked up.

Oh, and I have to thank Larryhead for getting me into that mess

hrmmm... if we're into witnessing fictional biblical events i'd check out Elijah's assention... chariots of fire and whatnot..

for really, though, I'd probably check out Kathern Hepburn's stint as Coco Chanel in the broadway musical COCO, that time Bette Davis kicked Joan Crawford in the head 7 times or that time Matty hit me in the head with his Jeep..

all priceless events, rife for reviewing.
