I thought it was "OK". I gave it a B- before, but now I'm changing that to a C for "medio-C-re". The entire set was mostly incomplete song medleys where he'd play one verse and one chorus of a song then switch into another song and do the same. I'm not sure if he actually played a full song all night long. :( And he only played a few partial songs off the new album "Guero". So that was dissapointing. He played "Debra" alone on an acoustic guitar, which was different, but didn't hold a candle to the original ballad. There was one song where the entire band sat at a dinner table w/ food on it and they used the silverware to play on the glasses while Beck played on his guitar... that was kinda fun to watch. The light show on the backscreen was well done too. :)
But the other big dissapointing thing was he didn't take his guitar off or move around or dance at all. Instead there was some other guy in a suit & tie dancing around with a boombox on his shoulder the whole time. Who is this guy? Why is he dancing on stage? I don't know. There was no dialogue with the crowd either and Beck usually has a funny story or some bizarre commentary. This show was very different from the Midnight Vultures show I saw last time (5 years ago?), where he was like a dancing inferno - literally making girls swoon and faint next to me. His stage presence was very minimal this time. I really expected a much better show, but I guess he is now older and married (and back into Scientology), so maybe the high tide mark from that era is too high to reach again.

Somone else can talk about the opening act... :help:
i dunno, i think he only played one medley early on, but it kind of pissed me off as well. i want to hear ALL of nicotine and gravy, dammit! and he played all my favorites from the new album, including black tamborine, summer girl, earthquake weather and e-pro. and he hit the old classics like loser, devil's haircut, and where it's at.
but yeah, all in all, not the mind-blowing show i'd hoped for. not seeing the dancing was a real dissapointment, but his stand-in dancer was pretty good. there just wasn't a lot of energy in the show. the faster, older, midnite vultures and odelay stuff was kind of lackadaisical, and the slower sea change kind of stuff didn't feel all that inspired. i'd give the show a B for Beck, but it's not the most impressive show ever. but hey, what can you say. he's hit the 10 year mark. and while i think the new album is completely awesome, his live shows may be in decline. oh well, i always have bootlegs of earlier shows.

i was talking about specifically this type of thing with Sutfin at the soooofyan stevens show the other day.
when bands play live, they gotta bring something to the table (well, in this case he brought an actual table but that's besides the point) or else it's pretty pointless to see them.
if the artist isn't doing shit on stage then i'd rather stay home and listen to the album. unless i have a chair.
speaking of which, sigur ros in like 8 hours.

So, I shouldn't shell out the $42 to see him when he's here in a couple weeks?
Shit! I'm so mad I missed Sigur Ros last week! I knew they were coming... was gonna get my ticket with my LasVegas Winnings and when I got back, sold out! and then Joel paid all his bills and couldn't afford his own ticket on CraigsList and I didn't want to go alone and shit! I'm kicking myself. His cello-caster gives me a stiffy.
I can relate to everyone's assessment of the Beck show.
The Coldplay show was good, but I was really hoping for more.
I think SQ put it best saying "I probably would have enjoyed it more seeing the tour for the last album..."
The band has great musicians. It's not studio polish that makes them sound good. They sounded fantastic live, but it wasn't much more than them playing songs.

I think its hard when you have seen amazing shows. You have alot of expectations going in. I'm sorry to hear about Beck show. Personally if I'm seeing Beck, his ass needs to dance. It was very thoughtful of him to hire a dancer to replace himself. How comical and strange.
It seems that I compare alot of shows to the Radiohead show, I think it was the KID A tour (can't remember). It was a couple of years ago but it blew me away.
Coldplay was great show, but it didn't blow me away. I would say if you get the chance and its not inconvient, to go see them. I talked to a couple of people who thought it was a fantastic show. The quality was great, I think it needed more volume.
diamond, i'd say it depends on how big a beck fan you are and if you've seen him before. i'd imagine midnite vultures and odelay were better tours, and if you're a huge fan, it's worth seeing him play it. sad not to see him dance, though.
i missed sigur ros this week. there's just too. much. music. u2 and franz ferdinand were playing the same night as beck. it's insanity up here.
i find myself gaging the shows i see against that radiohead show as well, and the times i've seen air. some bands can just totally lay it down live. from the bootlegs i've heard, beck used to be that way, but that was many many years ago.

Right now it's between Beck and Rufus Wainwright for me.
... I'm leaning towards Rufus. it'll be the third time I've seen him... and he has a crush on me...
it's a long story, but when i met him, there was noticable hesitation...

Tough call... though I'd probably be more into White Stripes.
