"The turmoil among file-sharing networks follows the landmark ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in June that held anyone who distributes a device used to infringe copyright is liable for the resulting acts of infringement by others."

Such complete bullshit.

there were/are a lot of posters up around town with something like "stop stealing from the artists" with apparent regard to the music industry. hmm. let's think about this.

*in any artistic adventure i have been a part of, the cuts of profit after producing agencies etc finish with them are not glamorous. granted, i am near bottom of the economic ladder in terms of whom i work with.

*so: who has the money, time, media contacts and distribution to put up all those posters? certainly not an individual artist. much like the posters used to advertise a show at the major venue, i would imagine those costs etc are handled by either

1. the specific venue
2. the producing agent, record label, etc.
3. combination of above

so to me it seems that a large company or production agency is putting up these posters; and, in doing so, implying that that their message "stop stealing from artists" is the voice of the artist crying out. but what they actually seem to be saying is "stop stealing from us, the production house, the record label, etc,!" while using sympathy for the trope of the starving artist to gain cred.

now i am not saying that anyone who has employment with a major label doesn't need to be fed and economically secure like everyone else, i think that the propaganda and empathy bait-and-switch is a bit shitty.

also, having just got back from some gig in atlanta for a smallish production company, i can attest to how irresponsibly and unefficiently money is thrown around on even the small scale. i can only imagine how that is more true the bigger the company.

well, "stop stealing from the corporate fat-cats who are slowly choking all of the life from your musical culture" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

funny, i haven't noticed any bands that just had to pack it all in and quit because of internet downloading yet. seems that if this threat were real, we might've noticed something like that.
