So 007 and I are about to embark on a cross country road trip to our new destination California.
What do you think would be great road trip albums? I need 5 days of music.
Suggestions? Any particular album favorites?

just a couple so far...
for daytime: Grateful Dead 'Europe '72'
Grateful Dead 'Grateful Dead' (first album)
Widespread Panic 'Space Wrangler' or 'Light Fuse Get Away'
Miles Davis 'Kind of Blue' (for city driving)
Pavement 'Crooked Rain Crooked Rain' (for desert driving)
for nighttime: Deep Purple 'Machine Head' (I know, unlikely... but awesome)
Miles Davis 'Bitches Brew' (late night driving)
Neil Young 'Tonight's the Night'
I'll try to think up more:

David Bowie, especially early stuff.
Also, Led Zeppelin's three disc set How the West was Won. That'll keep you busy for eleven hours or so.

We talked about this album in a recent thread: Son Volt's "Trace," which I think is excellent for driving, preferably on a two-lane highway.
Radiohead and the Flaming Lips are good for night driving.

These have all served me well on many roadtrips...
Odelay, by Beck
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, by Wilco
Unplugged in New York, by Nirvana
I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One, by Yo La Tengo
Permutation, by Amon Tobin
I'd consult my iPod, but I left it at home today.

I suggest lots and lots of heavy punk or metal for those drives through the cities. maybe some Pantera, Slayer, Rancid, Screeching Weasel.... Haha...that's right up your alley. Hahaha. But seriously, consider some Rancid: high energy and classically good.
I'll make some serious suggestions here soon.

For a nice chill one I suggest The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.

I definitely like Larryhead's selections... especially Odelay and the Yo La Tengo album (although I think the combo album 'President Yo La Tengo/New Wave Hot Dogs' is country-travel worthy... also their debut album too)
Now, Soul Queen, sometimes when you're barely awake driving late at night, nothing wakes you up more than some 'Vulgar Display of Power'-era Pantera.
Mix that in with some of Primus' first couple albums and some Fugazi and you've got yourself some natural audio-caffeine

My favorite driving mix would include the Allman Brothers (the song 'Jessica' reminds me of driving), Led Zeppelin, Biggie, some Blondie, and probably some Beatles. I like to play calmer music or music that makes me happy when I drive. And, for night driving, I'd bring some White Zombie, Rage, and maybe some Postal Service.

oh i love flaming lips. i also like the new my chemical romance album, if you're into classical music... there's an old yo-yo ma album called "soul of the tango". which is really beautiful and great for a road trip. (promise it won't make you fall asleep!)

Sweet!
I'll definitely check this out. I love Yo-Yo Ma. I just grabbed the 'Memoirs of a Geisha' Soundtrack, on which, Yo-Yo Ma teams up with John Williams & Itzhak Perlman. Quality. Check it.
I've also been getting into some terrific old-school tango music. Most notably - Agustin Magaldi, Carlos Gardel & Agustin Lara. Really, really good stuff.

Thanks!
I do love CTHD. Excellent soundtrack. Another quality recording is the House of Flying Daggers Soundtrack. I was just listening to this one last nite. If you like these other two, you'll also like HOFD.
Annie - can you play all these soundtracks?-- [noticed you were a pianist].
Minor deviation -
Have you seen all these movies [MOAG, CTHD, HOFD]?
Which is your favorite [SQ, Annie, Anyone]?

i saw all those before they came to america. i think that's the one of the +s in having a bf from hong kong. :D i actually liked hofd/cthd soundtracks equally. but onfilm i LOVED LOVED HOFDs because it was SO amazing with the colours and their movements were so graceful. have you seen hero or fearless? those are great movies also.
this has nothing to do with the music but has anyone seen "the departed"? i hated it, go see the original it's much better. it's hong kong's "infernal affairs". it's a 3 part thing but it's really well made.

oh i thought i already wrote this: i can play it on the piano but it sounds much better when i play it on the cello. although i'm rusty on the cello... i used to jam with larryhead all the time way back when! *sigh* memories

Saw Hero, queued Fearless.
I thought Hero was an excellent film for the same reasons you listed on HOFD. The colors were so vibrant & the director really strove to match color & mood within the film.
Overall - Thumbs up for all these movies.

I really liked House of Flying Daggers because of the colors and cinematography too.
I haven't seen Fearless yet, but all of the others listed.

I thought of another one cuz I'm listening to it right now: Portistatic "Summer of the Shark". Hotfoot put me onto it a couple of years ago and it's one of my favorites. I have like ten of their albums in mp3s but I'll admit this is really the only one I know, so I can't give a stamp of approval on the rest, although I'm sure they are great too.
