Argh. Keep that shit away from our fair city.
EDIT: I mean '16, not '06.
Agreed, bah humbug, I hate it too.
On the upside though... If it comes here, you'll be able to rent out a free room in an apartment for like $1000 per day. I've heard of people in Atlanta making a fortune just from charging people to park on their lawn.
Economic opportunities to gouge olympic going schills will abound.

true. never thought of that. however, the poor's gonna get effed and this city's gonna turn ridiculous.
but if it comes to it, yeah, this apartment's available for like a bill a day. i'll go stay w/ my parents in MI. (or i'll get the sandwich to set up his hotdog maker and we'll make millions offa chicago-style dogs.)
I was wondering how y'all were feeling about that. I know there has been a powerful group in Denver who have tried to get the Winter Olympics ever since I can remember. Every four years, the voters in Denver vote it down though. I always thought it would be wonderful to host an Olympics, but I certainly understand all of the community concerns.

I was living in Atlanta when they hosted the Olympics. it was horrific. I basically ended up holing up in the dorms until it was all over.

i haven't talked to a single person from Chicago about this that wants it. i don't either. i think it would be horrible. just thinking of the traffic alone that it would bring makes me cringe.

Isn't the choice now down between Chicago and San Francisco?
I think I heard that if Chicago wins the bid they are going to start building some giant stadium thing in Grant Park soon (can anyone verify?).
Just the thought of all the construction, congestion and additional Olympic tourists... :erf:
I really hope the Olympics are NOT hosted in Chicago!
That's funny...on ESPN Radio they have had several journalists from Chicago on, and every single one of them has been like, "The City of Chicago is so excited for this opportunity, and The Citizens of Chicago have all pulled together to ensure that we receive this honor, and You can feel the excitement in the air as Chicago stands on the brink of becoming a world city."
Must just be mumbo jumbo, or you guys are in the minority.

No, it used to be Chicago v L.A., but Chicago won the bid for the entire U.S.
Now they go against the world and we'll find out if we won in like twenty oh nine.

I think it was down to L.A. and Chicago as far as U.S. Nominees go. Chicago won, so now it is the only American option. It still has to compete against Rio De Janeiro and some other cities from around the world.
I am almost positive that is correct, but I could be wrong.
I wonder if they would tear down Soldier Field and replace it with a new Olympic Stadium. Doesn't seem like Chicago would need 2 gigantic football stadiums, and I am sure that they would not want to use Soldier Field for the opening and closing ceremonies.

i think the plan would be to build a new (possibly temporary) stadium in Washington Park, which is currently a large open-access park near Hyde Park.

It used to be San Francisco. But the their bid burst when the individual who was to build an Olympic stadium backed out of the deal. It was all over the news in San Fran in November.
