"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush says the possibility of an avian flu pandemic is among the reasons he wants Congress to give him the power to use the nation's military in law enforcement roles in the United States."
What?
"The Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 bans the military from participating in police-type activity on U.S. soil.
Bush began discussing the possibility of changing the law last month, in the aftermath of the government's sluggish response to civil unrest following Hurricane Katrina.
"I want there to be a robust discussion about the best way for the federal government, in certain extreme circumstances, to be able to rally assets for the good of the people," he told reporters September 26."

AAAAUUUGHGHHHH!!!!!!
People are so stupid and complacent that they probably won't even care if he DOES get the power to invoke martial law.
When I took the CNN poll next to that article, it was 53% in favor vs. 47% opposing.
Fucking SCARY.

Somedays I think that there is not much that can shock me about the American People.
There are days like today. Why would anyone think that is a good idea? Doesn't it seem at that point that we live in a Democracy no more. How far will it go....
Maybe we should all move to Canada.

guys, don't overreact.
bush wants to use specially trained forces that have neato guns that can target just the virus itself--no civilians will be hurt!
I think this is going be one on the worst aspects of 9/11 and Katrina. It really surprises me that the Patriot Act does not already grant the Fed'l Govt the right to local law enforcement. Really I don't think this will change anything except for the timeliness of relief/enforcement. As it is now, the President can call up the National Guard whenever he wants to. Typically they must get the permission of the Governor of the state, but not always (like in Alabama when Wallace was Gov.) It is becoming more and more difficult for local authorities to be able to deal with the threats (natural and otherwise) that we seem prone to deal with. What we saw in NO is that most of the local lawenforcement officials evacuated along with everyone else. That is one of the reasons (screwups by government at all levels) why it took so long for the lawlessness and suffering to be taken care of. All of the local people equiped to handle the situation had gotten the hell out of dodge. At one point I heard the entire city of NO had a total of 17 police officers in the city. I think that this law is an absolute waste of time, since it will really not change anything, all it is, is a covert political ploy to say that the destruction and aftermath in NO was due to the local government not being able to do what the Federal government could do if asked in time. What I find most disturbing is that a Republican is suppose to believe that local governments are in a far better position to solve local problems than the Federal Government. What has happened here is that a Rep. President has completely switched it around and is arguing that the Federal Government is better prepared to handled these situations than the local government and Democrats are freaking out about it. It is like the two parties switched. Those who scorn federalized legislation on school, welfare, civil liberties, and abortion are the very ones who are trying to legislate a national law enforcement emergency force. Those that oppose it are the ones who are for federalizing/legalizing all of the above. The two parties are actually switching their core philosophy on politics and nobody seems to care. Either you hate Bush and everything he stands for, or you love Bush and hate everyone who tries to tear him down. The politics and the issues no longer matter. President Bush could say that Blue is the best color in the world, and all of the Bush Supporters would claim that this was indisputable while all of the Bush retractors would say that Bush is an evil idiot and that this whole "blue thing" is just another example of how power crazed he is. Nobody cares about issues anymore, they are two complicated. Hate is much more simple. That is why we are going down the shitter.
ya know, if we had the national guard here in the, ya know, nation, they coulda, ya know, done a lot more.
cause that's, like, what they're for, ya know?

I love the fact how you can generalize everything that has happend down to "Hate is much more simple. That is why we are going down the shitter".
People are somehow convenietly over looking everything this man is doing! Can you honestly tell me that he is an angel that truely does EVERYTHING for the betterment of the country? if so then I whole heartedly agree with the statement you made about his supporters agreeing with his blue thoery. Its funny how democrats in office actually trying to do something has become them overreacting. How even Republicans have defected because of the things he's done while in office! I think its a level of insanity.
How can anyone take a president seriosly that says he's gonna eliminate forest fires by elminating forests?
He has the ability to lower gas prices and hasnt, refineries have admitted that they've raised prices based on the idea of a threat from a storm not because one has actually struck! I just think its funny that the people that actually say something against him are all overreacting all the sudden "trying to bring him down" lol, hes brought himself down without the help of anyone else.
And the comment made by his mother on TV..... what does that say about the mentality of there family? there morals? And in truth people do care about the issues or should I say mostly the democrats thats what there complaining about to begin with!
The U.S. is in so much debt now because of this man TRILLIONS! How are we gonna make that up? more taxes? taking away our social security? What has he accomplished other then destroying our relations with other countries and replacing one tyrannt with the face of another (the U.S. government)! What about the world were living in, dont get me wrong Iam not an enviromentalist but Iam not an idiot either I know why hurricanes are getting stronger and more frequent global warming, the ozone layer, things are getting hotter and hotter everyday! Why isnt he concentrating on anything that effects the world were living in other then backhanded politics and sketchy deals that Iam more then positive are effecting his bank accounts! I'll never forget hearing about him wanting to go to war then turning on the TV and seeing millions of people gathering all over the world in protest! Covering the streets, giving speeches, reasons why we shouldnt. And without listening he still did it. I remember hearing that the first place bombed wasnt a government building or military base. And after all the chaos and death, and scandal that there were no weapons of mass destruction to begin with, this turned to going from us taking away his nuclear weapons to "he tried to kill my daddy" claiming we had to free the people from oppression. Iam not even gonna make this anylonger because I'll just go on and on. I just cant believe that the attention has gone from a leader whose truely doing whatever he wants regardless of what the people say, to Democrats "that just wanna bring him down" and are overracting.
Cool Rant Simolean2!
Random comments/responses:
I never voted for W. I voted for Nader and Kerry.
I have never felt more betrayed then when W.'s claim that there are WMD and links to terrorism turned out to be a lie. I have no idea how anyone could possibly have voted for GW for a second term or could trust him on anything of importance again.
The only thing 2nd term Presidents care about is legacy building. That's It.
Gas prices need to go way up, not down. It is only when gas prices reach $4-$5/gal will we begin to look for more environmentally sound options for fuel. If we are not going to do that then we need to build more refineries, or we are going to have this problem for decades in the future.
Barbara Bush's comment was foolish and stupid, and I suspect that she regrets it.
The reason why Dem's get slammed is because the American people decided to elect Republicans in the White House, Senate, and the House. These Rep's have the manadate of the people and are in a position where they can do pretty much whatever they want. You can't blame the Republicans for winning and doing what they said they were going to do anymore than I can blame the Red Sox for kicking the crap out of my Cards last year. The only ones to blame are the American people for voting the way they did and the Democrats for not picking more persuasive candidates.
I consider myself to be a moderate, and what my problem is, is that moderates no longer matter in America. People are much more interested in towing the party line than in thinking issues through. I have several examples of this:
Tom Delay: If you are a Dem you believe that they finally caught this crook and that the prosecuting attorney is a wise and just man. If you are Rep, you believe that Delay is innocent and the only reason why this is brought up is because of a corrupt politically minded
prosecuter. The truth is, we have no idea what is going on, and to make a statement one way or the other only shows that you are judging things on politics not on the facts. If Delay is found guilty Rep's will still claim it was a set up, if acquitted, Dems will still claim he is guilty and somehow wormed his way out.
Judicial Activism: Rep's go apeshit about gay marriage, yet applaud religion in schools and the courts. Nobody is against Judicial Activism, they are only against it when it suits their political purposes.
Hurrcane: All dems blame W. for lack of response, yet freak out when legislation is proposed to make response times decrease. All Reps blame local and state gov't despite the fact that
the Pres himself took responsibility on National Television.
If you are a Democrat who believes in every single thing the Democratic party stands for... you are an idiot. If you are a Republican who believes in every single thing the Republican party stands for... you are an idiot. I absolutely can not understand how somebody can support Michael Moore and detest Rush Limbaugh (or vice versa). They are the same person!!!!!! Both political whores, both uncaring about issues or people, both only interested in furthering their own narrow agenda, both devisive and uncompromising, both willing to bend facts into any way it suits them. Because both (and their ilk) make for good ratings more and more people are becoming more and more radical in their beleifs without thinking about specific ramifications. That is what my major point of contention is. Sticking with the Blue example, you know Rush Limbaugh would be the first to support the Blue thing, and you know Moore would be the first to condemn it. Not for any specific logical reason, but only because that is what their whorish souls demand of them. I just don't understand when we started ignoring facts and instead focused on political bs. Perhaps it has always been that way.
btw I am an idiot too.

BAM!
Fuck America!
i agree with pretty much everything jvo said, which always amazes me, considering we're about as opposite politicaly as we can politely be. hell, we even both voted the same way the last two elections! if only politics could be a friendly debate between conservatives and liberals, as opposed to, well, politics.
but about the delay thing, i disagree with you. the man is just pure evil. they should ring him up on some charges for war crimes or something as well. and then hang him for treason. and then feed him to the pigs, texas style.

Its true I have a major weakness with cold weather. Mexico would be cool. Everyday I read about disappearances of people, and how no one is investigating it. The drug czars have taken over officially. I don't how I would feel with drug czar law.
There is tasty tequila in Mexico.
But Canada, maybe I could do it. I have lots of blankets! Coats!
