its always weird for me to realize that i live on an island. its not something i tend to remember on a regular basis. even when i take the subway either above or under the east river (to get to another island). so today after all the storms and rain, and everything flooded i was quickly reminded how really cut off from everything i am without the aid of mass transit. all the subways in my area were suspended this morning, and after much walking in the nasty sweaty heat, i finally gave up and took the day off. brian did the same cause it just isn't worth a two hour commute just to get to manhattan. besides not knowing if the return trip will be at all viable. so while i am not completely stranded, because we do have car, it kinda felt that way this morning. traffic was super jammed, the buses were packed and in the same traffic, and people were everywhere on their cell phones either passing along info or making arrangements. mass confusion! kinda crazy, usually i don't see so many people on the streets all at once. it was weird.

Does it make you realize how hopeless it will all be when the monsters come?

ag, were you in NY during the 2003 blackout? i was actually in ann arbor, where we got the same thing, and it was absolutely crazy. no cell phones, lights, traffic signal, gas, everything. i wasn't on an island but i certainly felt trapped and isolated.

(the first night turned out to one of the most memorable i spent in ann arbor. everybody was hanging out drinking on their porches because there was nothing else to do. somebody down the street started howling--like "howling like a dog" howling--and within a few minutes the whole street was howling. very cool, actually. and hilarious.

we missed the blackout. we were in southern missouri at the time, and actually i think i would have taken the blackout over that experience. but i guess i've gotten the mta strike last year and now today's fiasco under my belt so all is not lost. just so far there is no drinking and carrying on like with the blackout. i hear that was the most widespread thing about that incident. i'm glad you got to partake.

and yes, matty, the monsters are what scares me most. there was a guy on the street corner talking about just that this morning, but it seemed to me that most passer byes were woefully unconcerned. ah well, at least i will be prepared!
