i find Nielson rating both confusing and aggravating (in that they cause many good shows to get canceled).
here's a faq that i tried to wrap my head around. i know it's simple probabilities, but i'm not really good at math. just thought i'd post in case anyone was interested.

Problem is those ratings are worthless now. They are completely thrown off by DVR's, which I would say a majority of people use now. Shit my fucking parents use one regularly now.

that has been getting more publicity lately, but i think they say it in there...television networks STILL get most of their money from advertising, so they don't even count DVRs since 99.9 percent of people fast forward through commercials when they DVR. hence why a ton of shows get canceled - even if their viewing audience is large, their LIVE viewing audience could be small.
shoot even if i'm home i record a show and go do other stuff until the show's on for about 20 minutes and then i watch it so i can fast-forward past the ads.
they are now finding ways to add advertising to streaming tv, downloaded content, and dvd rentals now...but i don't see how they'll ever do that with DVR. they'd have to like make you watch a few commercials before you could even use your DVR or something.

don't mofuckas track tivo season passes and the like to see what's getting recorded? no one cares about that? peeps should look what shows is gettin recorded a bunch but not watched too much live, then just buy entire commercial breaks once per show (rather than little bits a few times per show) and flash up one obnoxious still shot the entire time. peeps fast-forwarding on DVR'd still be lookin at the ad for several seconds. DVR billboards and shit.
that's probably a shitty idea. i suck at marketing.

i am one hundred percent positive that the great marketing firms of this country will find ways to advertise to DVR users.
i say the best way to avoid the advertising is to watch less television.
