i've heard this documentary name-dropped like 3 times in the last few days... it's on PBS and something like 14 hours longs.. but it's supposed to be really good. anyone watching it?

i've watched a LOT of war documentaries, so i think i'd like it. but part of me wonders though, what more can really be said about the WWII generation that hasn't been covered already?

Ken Burns was on the daily show the other day. He said that they took six years to make versus the usual year or so to make a doc. I guess they dug real deep into the archives for video footage. There is supposedly a lot of color footage that has not been seen before. He also discussed that because of age, a lot of veterans of WWII are starting to speak more candidly about their experience. It sounded like it is full of new stuff. I want to see it just because Ken Burns is an outstanding film maker!

I have seen parts of the first 7 episodes (I think we are up to Sep 1944).

It has been good, but not great. They jump around from the war in the pacific to the war in Europe so sometimes it is kinda hard to stay in the flow or even remember what the hell was going on when it jumps. Also they spend a lot of time talking about girlfriends and family members who were left at home, which frankly I don’t give a crap about.

One thing is for sure, the Japanese are unbelievably crazy!!! In Saipan the last remnant of the Japanese’s Army on the island went from house to house forcing everyone to commit suicide rather than be taken over by the Americans. Those who refused to commit suicide were executed by the soldiers who finally executed themselves once their mission of death was completed. This was a big reason why we decided to drop the bombs. Every battle that involved places where there were Japanese citizens led to mass suicides. There are pictures of literally hundreds of dead children who were killed by their parents or by Japanese soldiers. Jim Jones was apparently their emperor.

I'll will be checking this out. But most likely after it makes it to Net Flix. I'm too fickle to commit a certain time to television.
