That's a great little movie! I saw that at an animation festival, here in Chicago, at the Music Box. That one stuck with me, popping up in my thoughts, for some time afterward. Very unique, I liked it, even though I can't figure out what they hell it's about.

I don't know what it's about, but I have some associations to share.

It is interesting that the characters are of a Dick and Jane variety. It first appears as a reading lesson, but becomes a grotesque cautionary tale.

The video game like nature of zapping bugs to get jewels (and byproducts to sell) leads these children to kill many creatures in order to gain money and power. The things of the world are labeled, so one fly is just the same as any other fly and therefore has no individual value, just as the cat and the horse and the rabbit are also expendable. They are materials, not beings.

The children make a jewel factory, killing other beings and spending their reserves of food in a greedy pursuit. They see no potential in the ink and feathers, unlike the shopkeeper, except as a means to get more wealth. The children did not show respect for the lives they took or for the power of the idol. They took for granted that a bug that was changed into jewels could just as soon change back.

The rabbit is an interesting vehicle for the story, as in many Native mythologies he is a trickster. The idol arrives in a rabbit, is eaten by a tiger, which becomes the rabbit again. The bugs return to eat the children, just as they had eaten the animals they slaughtered.

I don't know what to make of the feathers that turn into wings at the shopkeeper's place when the jewels turn back into bugs.

What are your thoughts?
