why? why do people jog in the street? there's sidewalks, ya know, they're perfectly good.

it happens a lot in my neighborhood. couples, typically, just jogging away, as if my car weren't even there. bikes, i don't mind, because, ya know, it makes sense. they should be on the street. but joggers? seriously, can someone enlighten me on this?

the concrete of the sidewalk's a lot harder on your knees than the asphault of the street.

see, now there is a perfectly good explanation

I was going to say they are douche bags.
Way to go with a logical explanation FA.

really? it make that much difference? i mean, if they're so concerned with their knees, why not just bike?

irregardless of your logic, i think i'm going to try to tap one of them next time with my bumper.

it makes a big difference. i run in the street (against traffic and at low-volume times, usually) often.

$, and most runners'd probably contend that running's the better workout. also a more relevant workout if you doin it to train for another sport that involves running.

but do tap hotfoot if you see him.

Nothing like springy, spongy, asphalt to reduce wear and tear on the joints of the body. . . . . . .

Get yer ass on the sidewalk is my vote.

yeah, or at least take the ipod out of your ears and try to be conscious of the traffic around you.

if you think running on concrete is bad for you, wait til you see how dancing with an automobile can affect your joints.

(i guess i don't mind everyone doing it, just the asshats in my neighborhood who make an active point of jogging right in front of my car)

Well, I'd say that it's safety, except as you pointed out, half of them have ipods on and are oblivious to their surroundings.

I have seen studies showing that riding a bike in the street is much safer than the sidewalk or an off street parallel path. Mostly, because if the bike on the sidewalk is moving fast, a right turning car might not have time to see the biker and stop if they encounter each other in the crosswalk. So, being in the street is better, if you're moving much faster than a normal walking pace, since even though you're more exposed, cars also can see you from way further back. I'm guessing the same thing might apply to someone jogging fast.

Seems ok to me on small residential streets. It is very annoying though, encountering oblivious ipod joggers in the bike lane on a busy street, and having to either slow to a crawl, or swerve my bike into traffic to avoid them.

The elastic modulus of typical sidewalk concrete is around 3,100,000psi while the elastic modulus of typical roadway asphalt is around 500,000psi. The elastic modulus of a material is used to correlate the amount of strain (deflection) in relation to the amount of stress applied. Therefore, concrete is about 6 TIMES as stiff as asphalt. This additional stiffness translates to significantly less energy dissipation due to dynamic loads.

Also, why do you think they make running tracks out of asphalt/flexible materials and not concrete. I mean geez slam, sometimes the answers are right in front of you! :p

And yes, I'm that big of a fucking dork. God bless being an engineer!

At least they're jogging. Around here people like to slowly saunter four wide down the middle of the street. Then seem truly offended when, after following them at 2 mph for half a block, you give a honk.

on the one hand, i'm glad people like you know this shit so that my bridges don't collapse.
