what. the. fuck.
New Line will make the two films and distribute them domestically, and MGM will distribute them overseas. The untitled sequel is described as bridging the 60-year gap between the end of J. R. R. Tolkien’s “Hobbit” and the beginning of the “Rings” trilogy.

oh OK. the dude who e-mailed it to me said they were writing a new story and then gave me that quote. where would the source material be? the lost tales? i thought those were all from way earlier.
anyhow i guess on one level i'm glad they're not breaking up the hobbit itself.

don't remember. I know that the Tolkien estate I'm pretty sure is still releasing official lore based on JRRs notes, so maybe it's from that. It'll still be awesome.

All anybody did was bitch about how the LOTR Trilogy left this or that out. To include everything would have taken at least one extra movie.
If they try to squeeze everything in The Hobbit into one movie, they'll have to leave something out or gloss over something, prompting everybody to bitch about it.
Imo, if they have to have an extra movie to be as accurate as possible with the original text, wouldn't it be worth it?

well yeah it'd be worth it. i just don't think they'd have to make significant cuts to do the hobbit. all the main shit should amount to about a perfect-sized epic fantasy movie that runs anywhere from 2.5-3.5 hours. maybe they'd have to compact some of the stuff with the lead-up to the battle of five armies or something but i don't see that as a huge loss.
with LOTR, there was just so damn much material that wouldn't translate well to the screen narrative that cuts were unavoidable. i'm not even sure a single movie more would've been enough to do everything justice. i mean i like tom bombadil as much as the next guy but fuck that cat they ain't got no room for him. (that was what i bitched about when i first saw it. i can forgive it in retrospect.)
guillermo del toro will direct. nice!
