So last night I watched Chris Matthews interview John McCain at Villanova University in Philadelphia. Matthews is doing this special where he interviews each of the candidates on different College Campuses in Pennsylvania. He had the Barack Obama one last week, and this week it was John McCain (Hillary Clinton and Chris Matthews are not on speaking terms so I don't think she is going to appear for an interview). After the first half hour of Chris questioning Sen. McCain, he opened up the floor so that students could ask questions. The first student's question was the absolute best, smartest, most impossible to answer question that I have heard anybody ask any of the candidates since this entire election has started. Here is the question:
"Sen. McCain, a while back during Barack Obama's speech on Race following the Jeremiah Write scandal, Obama claimed to have overheard his grand mother, a typical white person, say things that made him blush. Using Sen. Obama's definition, do you think that you are a typical white person?"
As soon as he asked the question, John McCain's eyes got really big, and Chris Matthews actually giggled out loud. McCain then said that it was the first time since he has been on the campaign trail that somebody stumped him with a question. The kid totally knew he got him too because as soon as he asked the question, he stepped away from the microphone with this big grin on his face, like he and his buddies had worked for hours to come up with the most difficult question possible to ask.
McCain said that there was no way he could possibly answer that question without offending a good percentage of the voters so he wasn't going to answer it at all, but he did then go on to talk for about 5 minutes about how wonderful Obama's speech was and how necessary it was for Americans to hear what he had to say on the topic.
BTW that entire interview was very good. Sen. McCain, despite his age, really fit in perfectly with the college crowd. They all treated him like a rock star, and you could tell he felt perfectly comfortable in front of the obnoxious Philly crowd.
I agreed with 95% of what McCain said about everything. Unfortunately, and this is the thing that prohibits me from being a McCain supporter, he is all about continuing war in Iraq and probably on to Iran also.
