"Spin magazine named Radiohead's "OK Computer" the top album of the past 20 years, praising a futuristic sound that manages to feel alive "even when its words are spoken by a robot."
1. "OK Computer," Radiohead
2. "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back," Public Enemy
3. "Nevermind," Nirvana
4. "Slanted and Enchanted," Pavement
5. "The Queen Is Dead," Smiths
6. "Surfer Rosa," PIxies
7. "3 Feet High and Rising," De La Soul
8. "Sign 'O' the Times," Prince
9. "Rid of Me," PJ Harvey
10. "Straight Outta Compton," N.W.A

For the most part... I like it. :)

What is missing from that list?
"Transmissions from the Satellite Heart", Flaming Lips
"The Lonesome Crowded West", Modest Mouse
"Enter the Wu-Tang", Wu-Tang Clan
"Teenager of the Year", Frank Black
I'm sure there are others. At least Surfer Rosa made it.
i can't really argue with "OK Computer", but De La Soul? seriously. Seriously.
snubbed:
"homogenic" - bjork
"richard d. james album" - aphex twin
"paul's boutique" - beastie boys
"odelay" - beck
"the score" - fugees

1. "OK Computer," Radiohead
Good for a mainstream album. Not worthy of the #1 spot though.
2. "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back," Public Enemy
Can't argue with Chuck D.
3. "Nevermind," Nirvana
Well-done commercialized version of the Pixies.
4. "Slanted and Enchanted," Pavement
Can't get into this album no matter how many people say how good it is.
5. "The Queen Is Dead," Smiths
Please.
6. "Surfer Rosa," PIxies
Should be #1.
7. "3 Feet High and Rising," De La Soul
I'm not even sure if this should make the top 10 hip-hop albums of the last 20 years.
8. "Sign 'O' the Times," Prince
What?
9. "Rid of Me," PJ Harvey
Another one I can't get into.
10. "Straight Outta Compton," N.W.A
Ok, we'll give some credit to the originators of gansta rap.
I'd have to agree with Slam on all his picks except maybe Homogenic. If Bjork deserves a spot on the list, I'd put Debut there. I think it's because you're such a big Bjork fan. Similar to how I like Bossanova better than Doolittle, but when I look at it from a "best albums" rather than "my favorite albums" standpoint (I don't even know why there is a difference between these two, but there is), I'd put Doolittle on the list first.
Other great missed albums:
"Dummy", Portishead
"Bizzare Ride II The Pharcyde", The Pharcyde
"Midnight Marauders", A Tribe Called Quest
"Energy", Operation Ivy
"The Boy With The Arab Strap", Belle and Sebastian
"Key Lime Pie", Camper Van Beethoven
"Radiator", Super Furry Animals
"Emperor Tomato Ketchup", Stereolab
"Pinkerton", Weezer
and of course, the undisputed greatest hip-hop album of all time...
"Sex Packets", Digital Underground
Doowutchyalike, bitches.

I agree with the "3 feet high and rising" outrage. Of all de la's albums, that one was completely maniupulated by the record companies to appeal to "white and black audiences" . . . the next 2 de la soul albums address this. . i guess no one was listening.
Also: 2. "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back," Public Enemy --- WTF? Do you know anyone other than Radio Raheem that listens to public enemy? Everyone I know that likes hip hop gives them the mandatory respect . . but for gods sake . . "Yo, Bum Rush the Show" was better . .but still not top 10 worthy.
How bout:
1. The Pharcyde (bizzare ride II) - (i agree with whoever just said that)
2. Common Sense - Resurrection
3. Tom Waits - Bone Machine or Mule Variations (both kickass imo)
4. Superstink - The Wallabe Survives the Holocaust (i just made that up)
False Alarm

Hmmm top 10 albums in the past 20 years. What type of criteria do they use? Influential, a great album that one just wears to death? hmmm
Missing from the list:
Tori Amos-Boys for Pele **A new unique sound for the time.**
Ani Di Franco-Up up up **a personal fave, she definately needs to be represented**
Air-Moon Safari
Where is the rock?
Coldplay-A Rush of Blood to the Head **Yes, people can still play instruments**
Pearl Jam-10 **I played it to death**
Beck-Mutations
----------------------------------------------
Personally if I had to pick a Bjork album I would have put Vespertine Album on there. But for influential sound Debut is a good choice.
PJ HARVEY SUCKS!
I think Prince is a good choice-He's funky. (Blouses Win!)

eff pretty much anything rolling stone does, music-wise. i hope the rest of that list included my bloody valentine -loveless, smashing pumpkins - siamese dream, radiohead - the bends (which is better than ok computer), sebadoh - bakesale, neutral milk hotel - the aeroplane over the sea, son volt - trace, wilco- yankee hoel foxtrot, jawbreaker - dear you, and something by sigur ros.
no way they'd include these, but they should: built to spill - perfect from now on, seam - are you driving me crazy?, hum - you'd prefer an astronaut, slowdive - slouvaki, and anthing mac mccaughan ever touched.
oh yeah, and steve perry's "for the love of strange medicine" if for no other reasons than the cover photo and the lyrics:
pray for you, baby blue
In the name of love I reach for you
In the darkness comes the evil of the night
Think about it
After much deliberation I had to dredge this up again. Here is my list :
1) Radiohead : Kid A
2) Air : Moon Safari
3) Beastie Boys : Paul's Boutique
4) Red Hot Chili Peppers : Blood Sugar Sex Magik
5) Norah Jones : Come Away With Me
6) Jack Johnson : Brushfire Fairytales
7) Amon Tobin : Permutations
8) Jurassic 5 : Quality Control
9) Pink Floyd : The Division Bell
10) Franz Ferdinand
Honorable Mention :
Wilco : Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Coldplay : A Rush Of Blood
Hepcat : Scientific
Paul Simon : Rhythm Of the Saints
Nirvana : Nevermind
Wu-Tang Clan : Enter the 36 Chambers
Genius : Liquid Swords

Now I know who you are, oldman.
The Richard Dawson avatar and your location had me wondering, but what finally gave it away for me was the inclusion of Phish and Cocteau Twins on your album list.
Good to see you!! Welcome to the board.

Yeah...Molina was so totally safe. Oh well.
I've been enjoying watching the ChiSox beat the shit out of the Astros.
Poor widdle babies! It's soooo cold in Chicago, unlike the conditions inside your 75 degrees-at-all-times, oil-money-bought, cushy covered stadium! Fuck those pussy Astros.
