Speaking of book threads, I've been meaning to start this topic. I've been reading Poe recently (needed something creepy for Halloween). I'm trying to decide what my favorite Poe story is. I like all the popular stories, but I like some of the less well known ones too. In particular : The Black Cat, Hop-Frog & A Descent Into Maelstrom.

What's your favorite Poe story?

I'm a huge Poe fan... I was reading him last night, actually. There's so many good ones.. here's some of my favorites:

The Fall of the House of Usher
The Masque of the Red Death
The Angel of the Odd
The Tell-Tale Heart
Some Words with a Mummy
The Pit and the Pendulum

I really, really like House of Usher.

When I was a kid, I had a children's book of Masque of the Red Death. Pictures and everything, really morbid. I still have it somewhere...

That's awesome. I think Masque is a fairly creepy story. Poe is great read out loud in the dark. SQ & I took turns when the power was out down here reading them aloud. It was fun & especially creepy when everything is dark & silent.

Also, LH, I am unfamiliar with a couple of those stories (The Angel of the Odd, Some Words with a Mummy). They aren't included in the book that I have.

EAP went to the University of Virginia where he stayed for (i think) two years. While he was there he became addicted to heroin, quit his job, and lost his scholarship. SOOOO in order for him to survive he began to burn all of his belonging in his fireplace. When he became famous, UVa closed off his dorm room and put some of his remaining belongings back into his room INCLUDING the tools he used to prepare all of the drugs that he took. There is also a number of burns all over the room from where he passed out and almost burnt the dorms down. On Feb. 10th every year (not sure why that is the date), all of the students who live on the lawn (where poe lived) all burn one piece of their furniture in their fireplace as an effigy to Poe. Many people believe that Poe's old dorm room is haunted, and from time to time there will be random messages on the inside of the glass in his old dormroom.

I was forced to read so much Poe in College that I really have very few positive feelings about him as an author. I like his poetry, but after writing like 8 papers on his books I just don't give a damn anymore.

there was a big hub-bub here in nyc a couple years ago when poe's house was slated for demolition... I think it was eventually saved, even though the only thing that was consistent with Poe's time was the facade... it had been gutted and remodelled and the interior would be unrecognizable to old ed.
