Has anyone else read Wicked: the Life & Times of the Wicked With of the West?

I read it a few years ago, before the musical was such a success and really enjoyed it! If you have any experience with the musical, don't judge the book by it. It is a lot more intriguing and a lot less bubblegum.

I'm re-reading it now because Macguire just released a sequel: Son of a Witch. That I'm excited to dive into but thought I'd refresh my memory of Wicked first... an easy 2-week subway read.

I'm a big fan of Oz and the extended Oz stories from Baum and his legacy authors. It's one of my ongoing collections. It's exciting that there are current authors willing to revisit Oz with the eyes of an adult and tell mature interpretations of the world and it's philosophies.

I don't know anything about the story of Son... but I hope it includes such beloved post-Wizard characters as the Hungry Tiger and The Highly Educated Highly Magnified (highly racist) Wogglebug.

anyone else out there into this crap?

I didn't like Wicked. I hate when a villian is just "misunderstood." I like my villians evil to the core, and proud of it.

Don't you think Glinda, the Wizard and Morrible were evil to the core?

Yeah, but I was expecting the WITCH to be evil! No, I ended up liking Glinda a lot at the end, so your point is very good.

Maybe I just read it at a weird time. I don't know--it just wasn't what I was expecting. I'll give it another read--sometimes I like books better the second time.

Do you guys remember that second 'Wizard of Oz'movie that was like a B movie, low budget... I remember it being tripped out and just plain creepy. There was some rock monster that ate people.

Return to Oz starring a young Fairuza Balk.

It's pretty good... you should add it to your netflix queue.
The clay-mation parts aren't that great, but tik-tok the mechanical man is kinda fun and the witch Mombi is so freaky! There's a good halloween costume for you a few days late!
