I watched this tonight and I have to say what a piece of CRAP!
1st I think musicals BLOW!
Musicals in a theatre I can handle...musicals via movie...UNACCEPTABLE...I'm shuddering right now thinking of them.
Really I feel like vomiting when I hear people break out in song on video or television.
2nd REALLY we spent millions of dollars about a killer barber and his sweetheart bitch baker?
3rd Why did everyone look dead throughout the movie?
I'm normally a fan of Burton, but yuck! My eyes have been SOILED! and my ears filled with CRAP...
I think it goes to show Americans will watch just about anything. Especially if someone says it was great on broadway! :dizzy:
Things like Momma Mia, Sweeney Todd, Grease, should not be allowed to exist...at least in a world of SQ visions...:groucho:
What is the appeal of movie musicals? I don't get it.

Wow.
I don't think Sweeney Todd shows that Americans will watch anything: your response confirms to me how you personally don't like gore or horror (your worst trait, in my opinion :p), and you don't like musicals. But it's kind of silly to just assume that because something doesn't appeal to you, it's just crap that stupid people watch.
I'd never heard of Sweeney Todd until I went to see a production of it at a small Baltimore theatre where my friend Michele worked. I am not a huge fan of musicals, but I do like the really good ones (Little Shop of Horrors, Grease: they remind me of being a little girl and singing, dancing, and acting out the songs and stories with my sister and best friend Tina). Anyway, I LOVED the darkness of it! The acting was top notch, the acoustics were phenomenal, and the songs weren't so corny as to turn me off (like Mamma Mia: I saw that on Broadway with my family and it really was a piece of shit, unless you like Abba). I DID really hate how the young sailor keeps singing, "I FEEL you, JoANNa..." It sounds offensively and unnecessarily sexual to me.
Anyway, the story is filled with anger, hence the dark quality. But in Burton's version, I don't think his set or use of color was any darker than most any other Tim Burton film I'd seen (most of them are claymation or whatever, though). I thought the plot was clever, and wickedly funny even. Maybe I'm one of the few who likes to see people get sliced up on film, but I do enjoy it as long as it's warranted. The man had his entire life ripped from him due to another man's selfish whim: of COURSE he's angry!
The movie showcases a singing Johnny Depp (he pulls it off) and an excellent, as always, Helena Bonham Carter. Even the guy who played the judge was was skilled as being deplorable that I couldn't help but appreciate his acting skills. And, BORAT was in the movie. I thought the cinematography was gorgeous and totally appropriate for the film. What more could you want?!
I like dark stories. Always have. Maybe 007 can blame it on my being from the east coast status (though my dad has lived in NY his whole life and is just like you, SQ: hates horror and gore). It's just about individual taste. But I will say, I did enjoy the version I saw at the small theatre more than the film. I loved the film, but the theatrical version was simply astounding. And I didn't even hear ONE review about what some idiot thought about the Broadway version.

"Reefer Madness the Musical" is incredible. It's in my top five movies of all time.
I also really like "Velvet Goldmine," which isn't so much a musical as has music videos/live performances of the central characters throughout.
Typically I don't care for musicals either, but I make exception for the two movies mentioned above.
What did you think of "Across the Universe?"
Moulin Rouge was pretty good and the original Charlie And The Chocolate Factory was awesome. I also really liked Grease back in the day. Oh yeah, you can't forget The Wall either, although that is more a music video than a musical I guess.
I am ok with musicals.
I haven't seen Sweeny Todd, but IMO (and I know most would disagree) Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are two of the absolute most over rated people in the history of hollywood.
I have tried to watch Across the Universe several times and just could not make it through.
I like imagining what normal movies would be like as Musicals. Like Rocky or Jurassic Park; now that would be entertaining.
i didn't think sweeney todd was that bad. i just assume that burton's wife (helena) makes him direct a movie ever few years wherein she gets to kiss on johnny depp.
see, they have an understanding...
as for musicals, 'hedwig' is a pretty good one.

I totally agree!
Children's musicals I'm more okay with. I like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Anything with fantastic costumes I'm more accepting. Moulin Rouge would fall in this category, Across the Universe as well. I would never own these films and have no desire to ever see them again.
I didn't see any growth from Burton in this film. It looked exactly like Sleepy Hollow. Shouldn't artists grow in their work? Who wants to see the same thing again and again. Why do the characters have to look dead all the time. Why were they all morons?
I think a good story has a great emotional tie to the audience. I felt nothing towards the characters in the film. And the ending was VERY predictable.
I think Poof and Lori like movies where the main characters are assholes. :drumfingers:
I'm thinking Sideways, that crappy thriller I watched at your place...Little Shop of Horrors...ewwwww:lol:

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp haven't grown since 1985!
As you know, I am totally with you on Sideways!
The type of film that I usually hate are the European period pieces where everybody is wearing a wig and drinking wine the entire time. Yucky! The only one of those movies that I have enjoyed (granted I try to stay away from them if possible, so I don't have a very big sample size) is "The Madness of King George" which was an awesome movie! Aside from that you can take the costumes and soapy intrique and shove it!

"Soapy Intrigue" sounds like the name of a romance novel.

"Dangerous Liasons" is a period piece, and another of my favorite movies. "Elizabeth" is another good period piece. "Shakespeare in Love."
I don't know how I missed "Hedwig." I've watched that movie like a thousand times. Also, "Moulin Rouge" is good, yes. I like musicals that are sad or feature a lot of very pretty people dying or getting tortured...
I also am sick of Tim Burton. It's the same all the time. I used to like it, but then I got old or something. I guess if you can get rich being a one-trick pony, you might as well.

I like musicals for the most part (in the theater or on film) but have not seen and have no desire to see Sweeney Todd because it's got too much blood and I'm not a big fan of horror movies. I liked Chicago (the movie) and Mamma Mia (I love Abba) and I've seen both live. Chicago I saw in London and it was phenomenal. But I have to say they did a great job with the movie adaptation. yeah, I don't really want to see Richard Gere singing and dancing but it was amusing. Same as Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia. He was so terrible that is was hilarious. And I still enjoyed it! I think it's just a matter of personal preference. Just because you don't like a movie doesn't make it crap. It's just crap to you, not everyone. You know the saying - one man's garbage is another man's treasure. To each his own. Oh, and in SQ's defense, she likes much more than fairies and warlocks. I usually like all her movie recommendations and believe me she has very diverse taste in films. I know, you were just kidding but I have to stand up for my buddy! Long live SQ and her opinions!!!!!!!

I'm glad there is another musical fan onbaord Whyvon. Just an FYI...Sweeney Todd isn't a horror at all. In fact, its rather comical. That's how I think of the blood as well. Its not horrific, but sort of comical in its grandiosity.

It's extremely bloody. And overall it wasn't a good film. I expected more. It's exactly like every Tim Burton film you've ever seen, throw in some song and dance.
Abba *shudder*

so, I stick up for you and you talk shit about Abba? :swear: Nice. JK. Once again, personal preference. I happen to really like Abba, as do thousands (maybe millions) of other people as can be seen by how well Mamma Mia has done in the theater and at the movies. It's not everyone's cup of tea. I don't know half of the music you and 007 have but I probably like about half of it and think the other half sucks. I'm sure you feel the same way about mine. Although I did introduce you to Guster so I should get points for that. :houseband:

Not a good film?? No SQ, no. I just cannot accept that. Beautiful score, filming, story is established well throughout. It just tells a story you don't like.
And I'm going hardcore, like everyone else on B2P: bullocks to Abba, and to silly fantasy films! And bullocks to Poof for being too far away from me this week :p

bullocks...to silly fantasy films!
i think you just dumped the baby with the water cuz pretty much every tim burton thing i've ever seen has been silly fantasy. sure, it's also dark fantasy, but so what? you're arguing over fantasy subsubgenres. we do things like that at my dungeons & dragons sessions while fighting imaginary battles against fairies and warlocks and wyverns--and all the undead types that populate tim burton movies.

A good story has characters that people can relate to.
The plot has to be emotionally believable. I didn't think it was.
Glad you liked it.
I don't think its emotionally logical for a guy to leave 15 years, come back, never look into finding his daughter and wife. Find out his daughter is in danger and not do anything about it. Start killing people and feeding them to the public without any emotional angst.
Most of the characters were pretty unintelligent. The story was boring. There was no suspense, we all know everyone was going to die, it just was a matter of when. Just a bunch of blood spurting Burton style.
Also, I don't believe that I've ever recommended a fantasy flick. For some reason Hollywood can't seem to make one. 007 and I watched the first DnD move months ago. What a terrible film! It also had a predictable plot, terrible costumes. I count myself lucky no one started singing and dancing! I'll give you Sweeney Todd was not quite THAT bad.
If your going to make a bad movie, you might as well make it ridiculously bad, so I can at least made fun of it. I wish I could burn the songs out of my brain... I got that Shit song Joanna in my head. great. That's what musicals do...imbed crap songs into people's heads.
I don't really have much more to say about it. I'm sure peeps are tired of hearing me rip on it.

Can we agree to disagree? People like what they like. We can trash it here all we want but they're still going to like what they like. Everyone in the world can tell me ABBA sucks and I'm frying brain cells by listening to that shit and I'll still play it whenever I can because it makes me happy! I'm not trying to change anyone's opinion, just expressing my own. Still have no desire to see Sweeney Todd...

Reasons I've heard from SQ and 007 on why they didn't like a movie:
--too long
--male nudity
--some actor that played some other part that they didn't like in a totally different movie
--one song on the soundtrack they did not approve of
They're a hard couple to please with movies.
SQ and 007--what are the top five movies for each of you? And I mean the top five movies like the five movies you watch the most, not necessarily the five best movies you ever saw.

He was taken away for 15 years because he was imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit. The mayor (or whatever) thought his wife was hot, so he had Johnny Depp arrested and imprisoned. After 15 years of being kept away from his wife and child, he was super pissed. And seeing that this man had kept his daughter, and assuming that his wife committed suicide caused him to become a murderer.
Anyway, please don't take any of this personally. I'm sure we can see eye to eye on some movies. I totally respect your right to like whatever you want; I was really only kidding around on here, and I thought you'd realize that. Sorry if I went too far :( I guess when said that a movie I really like is 'crap,' I decided that it was on. But I have a zillion differing opinions from most of my friends: some are even Republicans and I still love them ;)

Also one song! Try all the songs!
I'm not sure what movies I could watch at any time. I usually can watch comedies or action flicks more than once. Dramas and Thrillers lose their edge after the first sitting.

My top five movies that I will watch anytime, in no particular order:
Velvet Goldmine
Reefer Madness the Musical
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
LOTR
Those are movies I can watch with the sound on or off, which is usually what I do. (Cannot sit still through entire movie.) I turn the sound on when I want to hear a certain song or dialogue.
I recently learned to my chagrin that I will watch Austin Powers movies anytime as well, and giggle. Which is nice.
