Would you do it?
I always thought I'd be the kind of person who'd want to see that, but now that I'm on my way to her place an she's going to give birth any minute, I'm pretty much against the idea. Entirely. I guess I'm just too immature to watch all that madness come out of my sister, and to see her, in that way... Gross. Part of me feels like I'll be missing a cool opportunity, but most of me has the heebe jeebes.
i never wish to witness any birth, ever, for any reason. even less so if it's someone i know.
i had an anatomy class in high school taught by an imbecile, which primarily consisted of watching surgeries every week. the c-section was awful. i never want to see anything like that again!

I'm old school on this one. I'll be in the waiting room and call me when it's over.

Nope. I've heard wayyyyyyyyy to much about it to ever want to watch.
Have you ever seen pictures? Plus I would probably never have kids if I watched first.
slam-the eye surgery video got to me. It still creeps me out.

don't do it! i've read about it and saw videos in high school. it's pretty much the bloodiest, nastiest random fluids ever! oh, and the mother usually pukes all over everyone.

Eh...wimps. I think it sounds awesome. I definitely want to be present with the wifey. I've seen the videos, etc. Bring it on. Awesomeness.

not in a million years. I was at the hospital when my nieces were born and had no desire to be in the delivery room. too traumatic for me. yuck!

i would say no. if it was my wife it might be different, or if i was assisting as a doula or something it might be different. but i was with my sister when she was in labor with her first child, and once the doctors and nurses ushered us out and i saw those salad tong looking things come out, i was so happy to leave i forgot my shoes.
it is hard to see the ones you love in so much pain and really as much as i am for natural child birth and midwifery and all, i just don't need to see it. i have blood fears to boot, so i probably would have fainted.
congratulations on the new niece/nephew btw. today is my good friends birthday, and i would say it is a great day to be born!

man ain't no way i'd go in for my sis.
my girl and i are multiplying in a coupla months here and i already tried to get outta being in the delivery room when the time comes. she wasn't hearin none of that. i expect i'll faint instantaneously when the bullets start flying so maybe it won't be so bad.

I wouldn't want to see that - and I just gave birth!!! They offer mirrors so that you can watch everything, but why the hell would I want to do that?! I didn't want to see it, I didn't want Hubby to see it...no one wants to remember all of the junk going on down there. If I didn't have to be present, I wouldn't have wanted to be in the delivery room myself!

gotta agree with floppy and the rest of you guys.. i want to be present, but on the other end.
i imagine it will be crazy/awesome/memorable enough without all the additional visuals :)

I'd watch it. Fuck yeah!
Then again, I took pictures of my own gaping wound after my surgery, so I'm certainly in the minority.

Not for me either. If it were my wife, I would be there for support, but I would try to watch as little as possible, I'll be lucky if I stay conscious.
I watched my son come out. I usually am very sensitive to blood and gore. Cleaning up cat puke or vomit makes me gag uncontrollably. But, during the birth, the adrenaline level was so high for me, it didn't even phase me. I even cut the cord, which thinking back, seems really gross.
I recommend participating and watching it for anyone who has the chance. You'll be surprised at how well you'll rise to the occasion.
Hope your sister had a smooth birth, and everything went well.

Thanks! She hasn't given birth yet, though. The dr has been saying 'anytime now' for about 3 weeks, and said last week that if she didn't deliver by today, that he'd induce her. Well, his office just called and rescheduled her appt for tomorrow for one reason or another.
I seriously am scared. My sister just might kill me. So, we're going to the mall and eating spicy food for lunch; hopefully that will help...
Each of my sisters were present for each others deliveries. My niece actually watched both my sister (her aunt) and her mother give birth when she was pretty young. Of course my sisters are twins and share the same brain, so it was barely possible for conception to happen without both of them being there, let alone the birth.
In this, as with most matters, I will do whatever my wife instructs me to do. If she wants me present, I will be present, if she wants me in the waiting room I will gladly do that also. I surely won't be paying too much attention to the business end of the process though. My work down there is done!
I helped to deliver a horse once, and that was about as much of the miracle of life that I needed to see.
