VHS to DVD conversion

What do you guys recommend for converting VHS tapes to DVDs? I know there are some services out there, but I'm wondering if it would be worth it to try to do it myself. The costs might be similar, but I'm not sure if the services would be able to organize menu options the way I would want.

Anyone done this before?

never done it. all you would need would be a video card with capture capabilities (you can get those for under $50 i think), and the right software.

my folks have a couple boxes of vhs tapes in their basement.. a lot of childhood memories slowly deteriorating in a damp corner. if i had time i'd totally do this.
