View Full Version : Goodbye Coach Q

I just overheard a conversation between my boss and someone who has "close ties to the University of Missouri and the Athletic Director". This guy said that Coach Q has been notified that this is his last year as MU's coach. Because of the way his contract is structured and because of the probation demands, MU is better off financially to keep Coach Q this year and then let him go. The AD informed the Coach that he should use this year as a way to reclaim his reputation and use it as a way to improve his chances of getting another job at a major University. Good move?

This source (I love sounding all mysterious like) also said that two weeks ago Coach Q was at Lou's Palace and was so drunk that he had to be 86'd from the bar. When he was escorted out to the parking lot, he started screaming at this woman he had been talking to trying to get her to come over to his place for the night. The lady refused and Coach Q was persuaded to leave before law enforcement officials were contacted. I guess Coach is recently divorced and has really become a drunken carouser.

Also, this same source said that Pinkel (?) definitely will return.

I have mixed feelings on the subject.

Did MU give Q enough of a chance? No.

Will MU be better off with a different coach? Probably.

It is just so difficult to give anyone a chance in the coaching world these days. If you don't win within a couple of years, you're outta here. How long did it take Bobby Knight to win a championship? Tom Izzo? Lute Olson?

Only one team can win per year and coach Q took the Tigers as far as any coach ever has (Elite 8). Also, there is no denying the level of talent that he brings in with his recruiting each year. It takes a special combination of teamwork & elite players to go all the way. I think that given enough time with the talent level that he brings in, something special could happen. I have been a long time supporter of Q. I know that people have been calling for his head for a long time, but I stand beside him. What did Norm do for us for 32 years? Final Four? No. Quality competitive teams year after year? Yes.

Granted, Q seems to have gotten out of control recently (what with this divorce & all), but as long as he's not breaking the law, what's the big deal? Then again, maybe he's turning into the next Eustachy...

I can agree that I'm tired of finishing sixth (or worse) in the Big 12, but I am never a fan of giving the coach his notice at the beginning of the season. What if they finish second or third in the conference this season. Is it still "See you later"?

Who are they gonna bring in that is any better? MU is not really renowned for bringing in successful coaching talent.
I don't think they will bring in anybody better than Q. So all in all I am against any such move.

i think coach q is just not a good game coach. he's a recruiter. with the talent that he has brought to mu he could have done better. when mu made it to the round of 8 it was because kareem rush was good enough to carry us there.

year after year we see the tigers play undisciplined street ball. they are always beaten down the floor and they dont play defense as a team. they settle for jump shots instead of working the offense. these are things that college kids have to be coached to do. i just dont think that q can get his kids to play sound fundemental basketball on a consistant basis.

i dont know who mu thinks they can get that's any better.
we are stuck in a conference with ku, texas, and bobby knight. so, even on a good year you're prolly looking at finishing fourth. no big name coach is gonna come here when they can go to carolina, or ucla, or indiana, etc.
we are never gonna over take ku as the conference power. those jayhawks worship at allen field house. i know, i was there.

i think the story about lou's was funny. i dont care what he does in his free time. its been rumored for years that he does cocaine with his players and i think that's cool.

so mostly i guess i'm saying.... whatever.

mizzou arena is the finest basketball arena i've ever been in. every seat is right on top of the floor. zero said it was no good to see a concert there but for b-ball its good. i sat in one of the luxery boxes recently and it was fat. i mean phat! we had red and white wine, beer, crabcakes, chicken wraps, scallups, fruit, cheese, the works.

i think coach pinkel is a solid guy who is doing the best he can. he's gotta play texas, k state, oklahoma, nebraska, osu, a&m, etc. there's no way mu will ever be a football power.

I can track coach Q's downfall back to one particular instance : That first game against Syracuse when we first saw the 2-3 zone. Since then everyone has played 2-3 against us & Q has never figured out a way to beat it. It was a turning point for the team & Q.

I really agree with DP that Q is not a great game coach. This really surprises me though. I mean what better person could you have teaching you the fundamentals and game time strategy than Coach K? Plus, wasn't the year that MU went to the Elite 8 Q's first year? Didn't Norm bring in all that talent? Not sure if I am right on that or not. Really I am not sure that Q is that great of a recruiter either. Who has he brought to school that made any kind of impact? Klaisa (sp. ?) ? Then of course there is the suspension. You can be the best recruiter in the world, but it really doesn't matter if you can't recruit.

I do care what a college coach does off the court. If a UVa coach was arrested for drunk in public, or was seen making an ass out of himself in public, I would have a real problem with it. I don't think firing the coach for the first offense is needed, but if there is a long string of incidents, the Administration has to put a stop to it. Coaches go into family's living rooms and convince them to allow their children to spend the greater part of the next four years with them. How can they hope to bring in quality student athletes when parents are constantly reminded of probation and the coach's drunken behavior. Still I would probably give Q another year or two, but I certainly understand why the University won't. Especially after having Norm for so long it was going to be difficult for anybody to replace him.

First off, Coach Pinkel is allright by me. With the talent he is recently bringing in MU will be a powerhouse for the North title soon. Our defense has picked up this year along with being the best in all of the Big 12 last year before 2 of our linemen and a cornerback went to the NFL. Our offense will be fine in the hands of Chase Daniel. Although next year we may experience some bumps, after that we will be a powerhouse in the North division. :king:

As for basketball, this year will be rough as afore mentioned. Coach Q is a great recruiter but he is not a coach. He has pulled in classes ranked in the top 25 of many publicists yet has never turned that talent into a TEAM(Kleiza, Horton, Grimes, Brown, and Lyons were all heralded recruits coming to Missouri). He never makes adjustments and for God's sake learn to beat the zone! Just find the soft spots you jackass.
I don't give a damn if he trips balls outside of team functions just be a decent coach. With the talent he blew with Johnson, Bryant, and Paulding, Coach Q was either trying to keep a low profile on paying our players during the search or else he is the worst coach of all time.
He should not be told coming into the season he will be fired because like someone else said 'What if he does great?'. However Q should be fired if he loses one more game to a shitty team. Just fire him on the spot.

Hopefully Bob Huggins will still be around by the time we call on him. He would be a fine addition and with a coach who actually TEACHES we could pull together a damn good team to be feared in the Big 12. Missouri will once again rise to the top of the conference(just not this year).

Go Tigers!!! :roses: (Goin bowlin' baby!)

As I understand it, at this point the Administration could care less how Coach does. He will still be fired at the end of the season. Even if MU goes to the tournament, he will still be fired. The Administration does not believe he is a positive force at MU. And they are more concerned with the reputation of the University than wins/losses.

Huggins is one of my most hated B-ball coaches of all time, so it would be interesting in they hired him. I doubt that will happen since they are wanting to clean up their act.

Pete Gillian is available. That would be a nightmare.
