I have just caved in to the evil Starbucks empire and gotten a blueberry muffin and almond venti cappuccino. Venti is their lingo for large, but there is already a size called "large", which is actually smaller than "venti". I don't get it.

Have a good day all. :)

it's simple marketing, larryhead:

people might not be willing to pay $3 for a 'small' coffee. so just rename your smallest size 'large'.

watch the lemmings shell out ther cash for some water filtered through roasted beans.

you silly boys- don't be stupid.

there is no cup size called "large" at starbucks.

there are 4 sizes but 15 years ago there were only 2 sizes. short & tall (8 & 12oz, respectively).
As the glut of america's snack-hole mawed open, there were demands for larger and larger sizes.
Grande and Venti were introduced (16 & 20 oz.). Grande is named so because it is the medium size in itallian fashion. Venti is so called because it's 20 in itallian.
Ironically, the Iced Venti cup is actually 24 oz. they also get another shot of espresso. That's why they cost more than their hot counterparts.

do they still have the 'short' version? i thought it was just like large, grande, extra grande or something.

but then again, i haven't been in starbucks in years. dunkin' donuts in my addiction.

There was a great little coffee shop chain in my building, and a few months ago Starbucks bought them out and closed down all their Chicago locations (Cafe Torrefazione, I think?). And did they open a Starbucks in these locations? No. They just simply closed them down. Then a month later some cheap-ass, no-name coffee shop moved in because everyone in the building started complaining about massive caffeine withdrawal... it's funny because this new place has terrible coffee, burned milk and is not very good at all. So, I'm betting they are some subsidiary of SB or they are allowed to exist because their product is crap, and there are 3 SB's a block away to choose from.

What happened to Torrefazione? (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2002335093_coffee14.html)

Wow.. that is very interesting. I had no idea Starbuck's has owned Torrefazione and Seattle's Best for the last two years.

There is no escape!
