Yes, yes they did.

The thing that really pisses me off, is that you can't buy stamps with the new amounts on them (except .39) until they run out of the old stock. So if you send stuff that is more than 1 oz you have to buy a bunch .03, .04, .05 cent stamps.

The post office is Communist!

You CAN get .39 centers, but you CANNOT get .63 (for 2oz.), .87 (for 3oz.), or 1.11 (for 4oz.) stamps. Instead you have to use the old .60, .83, or 1.06 and then buy a bunch of .03, .04, and .05 in order for them to match. Also they advertise that they are only increasing the rate by .02, but that is not true. For every ounce above 1 they are increasing the price an extra penny. So 8 oz. mail is .08 more expensive than before. Flat rate mail increased .15.

I hate the post office. Every year they make a profit, yet they invest millions of tax dollars in advertising and continually increase the price of stamps. Why does the post office advertise? And if the post office is not making a profit in certain areas, why do they continue to offer them, when there are other private companies that do a much better job anyway? Just another Government boondoggle.

I read that the USPS employs around 900,000 people. Given that there are so many shipping alternatives eating into their market share (FedEx, DHL, UPS, etc.), whom all advertise extensively, I think the USPS has been forced to compete/advertise or risk massive layoffs. But really, I don't know... is the USPS federally funded at all or does it fund itself?

I had a big discussion about this with our VP. He said that USPS is supposed to be self sufficient, and in fact does make a huge profit every year. But because the Post office is tied into other parts of the government, they will generally take the profit away from the USPS and use the money for other things. Technically they are not supposed to do that, but there is really no oversite so they can pretty much do anything they like.

You raise a good point, but my contention is why does the Post Office feel the need to offer all of these services that other industries clearly do just as well? Is the only reason why because we are afraid of the loss of jobs? If so, then by that philosophy we should make sure that the crime rate does not decrease or we may have to lay off some policeman. Or we need to make sure that we are always in a war or we may have to lay off some people in the military. The amount of tax dollars and postage that Americans pay is more of a drain on the economy than it would be to lay off even 30,000 employees. This increase in postage represents an estimated $2500.00 that our little company will have to shell out for postage a year. Imagine the impact on companies who have to mail bills to people every month. And of course this increase will be passed on to the consumer. The post office is suppose to fill a need. The need is no longer there so why continue the service?
